Contentment in its barest essence is a genuine relationship with Jesus philippians 3:8, 4:10-14 . But coming to understand how a genuine, growing relationship with Jesus adds up to contentment is a Biblical wonder and perhaps a mind-altering Truth that is worth unpacking.

What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for Whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ

I rejoiced greatly in the Lord that at last you renewed your concern for me. Indeed, you were concerned, but you had no opportunity to show it. I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him Who gives me strength. Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles.

Even though we tend to blame others or worse yet -God- for our life’s woes; discontentment is not a result of circumstances, people’s actions towards us or even God’s sovereign will, but rather discontentment is a matter of our own wicked heart towards those things proverb 19:3 . We are in the destructive habit of grumbling about any and everything that does not goes as we would have it i corinthians 10:10  which should displease God, the Orchestrator of our lives, as any grumbling is actually a complaint against Him numbers 16:41-49  i samuel 8:6-8 . And even when all things come out as we would have it, our wicked hearts revel in still looking for more and being discontent even in the greatest circumstances genesis 2:16-17, 3:6  proverbs 27:20 .

This comes because our hearts are seeking a different god than the True God, which corrupts the soul with ever-growing dissatisfaction ephesians 4:18-19  ecclesiastes 5:10  and the constant affliction of miserable disappointment psalm 16:4  psalm 7:14 . There is the opportunity cost of exchanging the glories of God romans 1:23  for the frustrating, passing pleasures of idols jonah 2:8  ezekiel 7:19 .

So, our minds need to be transformed, altered, from a natural way of thinking i corinthians 2:14  james 3:15  to the supernatural way romans 12:2  i corinthians 2:15-16 . For contentment to take root in our lives we need to sow a Biblical way of thinking. For what you believe about yourself, your relationships, your circumstances, etc. will dictate your reception, perspective, experience, and response to those very things luke 7:36-47  psalm 18:25-26 . Do you believe you owe or are owed i corinthians 1:26-29  romans 11:35-36 ? Do you believe you are unworthy of the goodness God already bestows genesis 32:10  or is it practically impossible for you to truly appreciate His grace in your life because you do not really recognize your desperate need for His gracious work in you luke 17:7-10  isaiah 26:10 . We need God’s insight to know His grace proverbs 2:1-6  because we on our own would never come to realize that no matter how bad one’s life is now, it is still His grace at work ezra 9:13  micah 6:9  hebrews 12:7, 10  job 36:5-24  ecclesiastes 9:4  proverbs 19:18  ii samuel 7:14 . When it is not as we would will, that is not God arbitrarily afflicting us lamentations 3:32-33 , but rather Him working to turn our hearts to His life and peace ezekiel 14:1-11 .

Beware of turning to evil, which you seem to prefer to affliction.

God is exalted in His power. Who is a teacher like Him? Who has prescribed His ways for Him, or said to Him, ‘You have done wrong’?

Remember to extol His work, which people have praised in song.
