Helmet of Salvation

The helmet of salvation or the hope of salvation i thessalonians 5:8  is living in the salvation Christ has deposited in you through the Holy Spirit ii corinthians 1:22  ephesians 1:13-14 , anticipating it to be surely completed even as you wait for its arrival titus 2:13 . Biblical hope is not wishing or mere positive thinking, but a confident expectation of the inevitable fulfillment of God’s Word- His promises for you romans 8:22-25, 28-29  ii corinthians 1:20 .

The helmet of salvation is much like the shield of faith in that it armors us now against temptations colossians 2:23-3:5  and equips us to do good colossians 3:12-14 , but instead of simply enduring current hardship it additionally gives us an eye of persevering towards an end, a future effect hebrews 10:36 , so we know hardship will not go on forever isaiah 28:28 . Biblical hope guards our minds as we pray, think, and practice the Word philippians 4:4-9 . In this way hope is a circular staircase that gives us the ability to rejoice romans 12:12  even in trials knowing they are producing character and more hope romans 5:2-5  as such hope cleanses us i john 3:2-3  and thus self-perpetuates more hope.

These rules may seem wise because they require strong devotion, pious self-denial, and severe bodily discipline. But they provide no help in conquering a person’s evil desires. Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, Who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all His glory.

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world.

Biblical hope is longing for something greater than what we experience now ii timothy 4:6-8  hebrews 11:1 , but knowing it does not depend on us, but rather the Lord to bring it about ii timothy 1:12  isaiah 26:3 . So, our minds are guarded so as to take great comfort now in a certain future colossians 1:5 . This piece of armor enables us to know that "My Redeemer lives" and that it will be alright in the end. So, if it is not alright now, it is not the end job 19:25-27 .

Sword of the Spirit

The Roman sword was versatile and powerful. Many credit the sword of the Romans as the reason for their dominance as it was useful in any military situation. It is fitting then that the Scriptures would be paralleled with it as it is useful for any and all needs of our hearts ii timothy 3:16-17  ii peter 1:3 . Whether it is the literal study of it, memorization of it, the reasoning from it, the practice of it or the bathing in it, the Word of God is supremely useful to combat and win our heart psalm 119:9-11  proverbs 4:7  so to be saved james 1:21 .

Scripture is our double-edged, spiritual sword that allows us to know BOTH Truth & Love job 11:6  ii john 3-6  which allows us to fight off the two deadly schemes of the enemy: licentiousness and self-righteousness mark 8:15 . It does so by precisely penetrating the heart and exposing the heart’s battle hebrews 4:12-13 .

The enemy distorts the Word for wicked ends, but the Scriptures testify of themselves, elaborating and confirming the True teaching matthew 22:29 , so we can parry and thrust away distortions with further Scripture matthew 4:1-11  ii corinthians 13:1 , and meet our heart head-on in its dilemmas psalm 42:9-11  lamentations 3:18-23 .

Prayer

Prayer needs no analogy as COMMUNEication is the point. Sadly, we often artificially separate it from the Armor of Light and neglect it even though it can be a most potent weapon and defense james 5:13-18 . Though prayer is mysterious to us and thus may lend us to thinking on ritualistic, mystical combat; prayer, simply put, is COMMUNEication with God (sharing and experiencing with one another). It would be much like our modern communication system by which we can call for reinforcements psalm 50:15 , airstrikes psalm 18:6-19  and orders psalm 119:26 . For in this spiritual war of our hearts, ultimately it is the Lord Who wins the fight ii chronicles 20:17 .

Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. We are to pray with the attitude the Holy Spirit inspires within us romans 8:15, 26  as we actively approach God because He loves us jude 20-21 . So, praying in the Spirit is having the courage to go to the Lord just as a naive child would to an adoring father, no hesitancy…with full abandon and with all confidence galatians 4:6  hebrews 4:13-16 .

In the spiritual battle our prayer is an activation of our armor as we consciously acknowledge our desperate need for God’s help hebrews 4:16 , confessing and renouncing what has hindered our relationship with the Lord jeremiah 3:12-14  proverbs 28:13  i john 1:9  and reasoning out our heart’s concerns with the Lord isaiah 1:18-20  i peter 5:7 . We do this always remembering to give thanks philippians 4:6 , as attentive gratitude to God guards us against self-righteous deception and directs our freedoms into sanctification instead of wicked indulgence i timothy 4:3-5 .

Our spirit may be willing, but it is in prayer we acknowledge and stay on guard to the truth that our fleshly heart is weak matthew 26:41  and needs to be guarded against as if it were a foreign infiltrator in our relationship with the Lord romans 7:14-23  i peter 2:11  proverbs 4:23 , until He transforms it ezekiel 36:26 . So, we pour out our heart to Him for that is the battleground and when we persistently give it to Him, He wins the battle in us, for in prayer we are consciously cooperating, trusting and giving our heart over to His relationship-building work psalm 62:8 .

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

So the trouble is not with the law, for it is spiritual and good. The trouble is with me, for I am all too human, a slave to sin. I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate. But if I know that what I am doing is wrong, this shows that I agree that the law is good. So I am not the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

And I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. I want to do what is right, but I can’t. I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. But if I do what I don’t want to do, I am not really the one doing wrong; it is sin living in me that does it.

I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.

In addition to all of this we get to participate with each other, shoulder to shoulder, on the frontlines of the battle through prayer zephaniah 3:9  as we have no direct control of another’s heart, but still get to wrestle, share and grow in each other’s struggles through prayer romans 15:30  colossians 4:12  proverbs 27:17 .

So then, prayer, so to speak, binds all the armor together as fasteners should. It is the Lord Jesus you are putting on in this armor, so it is appropriate that communing with Him would activate the whole of the armor. We are to be in constant, honest communication with the Lord romans 12:12  on ALL occasions, with ALL kinds of needs, thoughts, struggles, praises, etc. i thessalonians 5:16-18 , with ALL the perseverance we have luke 18:1 , for ALL our fellow combatants as well i timothy 2:1-4 . For speaking what is going on in our hearts makes us aware and thoughtful of the current battle and attentive to the only One Who can deliver us colossians 4:2  luke 21:36 .
