Scripture Is the Best Interpreter of Scripture
section 1
Individual, isolated interpretation is misleading jeremiah 17:9 as even the prophets were not to bring their own agenda to Scripture ii peter 1:20-21 judges 21:25 . Biblical words have true, God-given meanings i corinthians 2:13 ecclesiastes 12:11 ; while exclusive, isolated meanings separate from, they do not unite us to God i corinthians 14:10-11 . Scripture should be understood from God’s point of view, not ours deuteronomy 12:28 proverbs 14:12 proverbs 3:5-6 , as He is the Author, Creator, Master, Standard, etc. isaiah 45:9-12 . We are the ones who need to amend ourselves to Him, not Him to us james 4:12 job 34:31-33, 38:2-3, 40:2, 8 . So, we draw from the Lord’s Word {Exogesis}, we do not force our values, agendas, beliefs, culture, experiences, etc. into what God says {Eisogesis} ezekiel 18:29 .
Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things. For prophecy never had its origin in the human will, but prophets, though human, spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
my notes:
In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.
The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd.
Undoubtedly there are all sorts of languages in the world, yet none of them is without meaning. If then I do not grasp the meaning of what someone is saying, I am a foreigner to the speaker, and the speaker is a foreigner to me.
Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the LORD your God.
my notes:
Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.
Woe to those who quarrel with their Maker, those who are nothing but potsherds among the potsherds on the ground. Does the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you making?’
Does your work say, ‘The potter has no hands’?
Woe to the one who says to a father, ‘What have you begotten?’ or to a mother, ‘What have you brought to birth?’
This is what the LORD says— the Holy One of Israel, and its Maker: Concerning things to come, do you question Me about my children, or give Me orders about the work of My hands? It is I Who made the earth and created mankind on it. My own hands stretched out the heavens; I marshaled their starry hosts.
There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One Who is able to save and destroy. But you—who are you to judge your neighbor?
my notes:
Suppose someone says to God, ‘I am guilty but will offend no more. Teach me what I cannot see; if I have done wrong, I will not do so again.’ Should God then reward you on your terms, when you refuse to repent? You must decide, not I; so tell me what you know.
"Who is this that obscures My plans with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me.
"Will the one who contends with the Almighty correct Him? Let him who accuses God answer Him!"
"Would you discredit My justice? Would you condemn Me to justify yourself?
Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are My ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?
my notes:
section 2
So, to properly interpret Scripture one should draw conclusions from Scripture on the basis of at least two to three corroborating passages deuteronomy 19:15 ii corinthians 13:1 ; as we are not the best interpreters of Scripture; Scripture itself is. Scripture is the best interpreter, elaborator and corroborator of Scripture john 5:31-47 luke 24:48 matthew 4:5-7 because of the harmonious, cohesive message of Scripture acts 15:15 acts 17:11 john 10:35 ecclesiastes 12:11 .
One witness is not enough to convict anyone accused of any crime or offense they may have committed. A matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.
This will be my third visit to you. "Every matter must be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses."
my notes:
If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not true. There is another Who testifies in My favor, and I know that His testimony about Me is true.
You have sent to John and he has testified to the truth. Not that I accept human testimony; but I mention it that you may be saved. John was a lamp that burned and gave light, and you chose for a time to enjoy his light.
I have testimony weightier than that of John. For the works that the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I am doing—testify that the Father has sent Me. And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified concerning Me. You have never heard His voice nor seen His form, nor does His Word dwell in you, for you do not believe the One He sent.
You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.
I do not accept glory from human beings, but I know you. I know that you do not have the love of God in your hearts. I have come in My Father’s name, and you do not accept Me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God?
But do not think I will accuse you before the Father. Your accuser is Moses, on whom your hopes are set. If you believed Moses, you would believe Me, for he wrote about Me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say?"
my notes:
Then the devil took Him to the holy city and had Him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If You are the Son of God," he said, "throw Yourself down. For it is written: " ‘He will command his angels concerning You, and they will lift You up in their hands, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’"
Jesus answered him, "It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’"
Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
If He called them ‘gods,’ to whom the Word of God came—and Scripture cannot be set aside—
The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd.
my notes:
section 3
When we have conflicting interpretations of Scripture in our own understanding, we should once again seek the Lord’s view to find the synchronicity…that world building…Truth declaring harmony of God’s Word ii timothy 2:13 . Whether it be our own conclusions or a teacher’s commentary that makes Scripture seem contradictory, keep sorting through the Scriptures to reject what is false and cling to what is true galatians 1:8 ii peter 2:1 i thessalonians 5:19-22 . Though Scriptures are often challenging to our limitations hebrews 5:11 and therefore readily not understood ii peter 3:16 by those wanting to justify themselves luke 10:29 ; Scriptures will not be found false by those who make the effort to thoroughly test them psalm 119:140 .
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let them be under God’s curse!
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord Who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves.
my notes:
Do not quench the Spirit. Do not treat prophecies with contempt but test them all; hold on to what is good, reject every kind of evil.
We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.
He writes the same way in all his letters, speaking in them of these matters. His letters contain some things that are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the other Scriptures, to their own destruction.
