section 1
Hope is also developed from faith in God through hardships romans 5:1-5 . God subjects us to frustrations for the sake of hope romans 8:20 , so that we learn to hope in Him rather than any other false hope ii corinthians 1:9 hosea 2:6-7 . As our character is built up in the training nature of perseverance necessitated by hardship hebrews 12:7-13 , hope becomes the supernatural state of mind, the perspective that shapes the understanding of all that transpires romans 12:2 . The person who has gone through little hardship lacks perspective job 12:5 , whereas the one who has gone through hardship job 36:15 and especially lives in hardship has been afforded the opportunity to truly experience hope isaiah 38:15-17 and thus be equipped to be content in all situations, pleasant or unpleasant james 1:2-4 philippians 4:11-13 .
For without hardship to lead us to God ii corinthians 12:8-10 we would not be able to enjoy even the most pleasant circumstances ecclesiastes 2:24-26 . The one with faith in Jesus has a perspective beyond the veil of the flesh and thus has access to an inexpressible joy in the midst of hardship as they await in hope for their Love to come rescue them from their harsh circumstances i peter 5:10 ii timothy 4:18 revelation 21:4 and own wicked heart i peter 1:6-9 i john 3:3 galatians 5:5 .
my notes:
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit Who has been given to us.
For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One Who subjected it, in hope...
In fact, we expected to die. But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learned to rely only on God, Who raises the dead.
Therefore, this is what I will do: I will block her way with thorns; I will enclose her with a wall, so that she cannot find her paths. She will pursue her lovers but not catch them; she will look for them but not find them. Then she will think, "I will go back to my former husband, for then it was better for me than now."
my notes:
Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline — which all receive — then you are illegitimate children and not sons.
Furthermore, we had human fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn’t we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness.
No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.
Therefore, strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed instead.
Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is--His good, pleasing and perfect will.
In the thought of one who is at ease there is contempt for misfortune; it is ready for those whose feet slip.
my notes:
"What shall I say? He has both spoken to me, And He Himself has done it. I shall walk carefully all my years In the bitterness of my soul. O LORD, by these things men live; And in all these things is the life of my spirit; So You will restore me and make me live. Indeed it was for my own {shalom} That I had great bitterness; But You have lovingly delivered my soul from the pit of corruption, For You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him Who strengthens me.
Concerning this, I pleaded with the Lord three times that it would leave me. But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness." Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
my notes:
There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, for apart from Him who can eat or who can have enjoyment?
For to the one who pleases Him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner He has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
The God of all grace, Who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while.
The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into His heavenly kingdom. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away."
my notes:
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness.

section 2
From the revelation of Scripture, we are given insight to see hardship as God’s love. We can see hardship as literally the proof ii thessalonians 1:4-5 of God’s Word being true ii peter 1:19 . From this revelation, discipline is God treating us as His accepted children hebrews 12:6-7 ii samuel 7:14 , so then we also can be sure that we are His heirs romans 8:17 . He has told us all these difficulties would come upon us so that we would have the benefits of hope in the Truth john 16:33 as our lives are experienced the way He reveals in the Word psalm 119:107 . So, we can harvest hope from hardships because the presence of difficulties described in God’s Word confirms the certainty of His good promises awaiting completion romans 15:4 .
Therefore we ourselves boast about you in the churches of God for your steadfastness and faith in all your persecutions and in the afflictions that you are enduring. This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering—
We also have the prophetic Word strongly confirmed, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.
my notes:
...the Lord disciplines the one He loves and punishes every son He receives. Endure suffering as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there that a father does not discipline?
I will be his Father, and he will be My son. When he does wrong, I will discipline him with a rod of men and blows from mortals.
...if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.
I have said these things to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.
For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
my notes:
section 3
Ultimately, Biblical hope is based on everlasting life that overcomes even our own physical deaths i peter 4:6 . It is from this coming victory i corinthians 15:26, 55-58 that all other Biblical hopes have their basis romans 4:17 , for if death is to be overcome, all other griefs i thessalonians 4:13 will turn out for our deliverance philippians 1:19 . Our faith and love grow from this hope colossians 1:4-5 so that through all hardships we may perSEVERE knowing His life overcomes our death and will end with glories super-worthy of thankful praises ii corinthians 4:7-15 . We are destined, purposed to bring Christ praise for His glorious salvation; we look forward in hope to this ultimate end ephesians 1:11-12 so we need not be troubled as we will certainly live with Him forever john 14:1-2 , and the trials we now face are just preparing us for the joy of unwrapping the gift of His glory i peter 4:12-13 .
Participating in the death of Christ is just stepping into His resurrection romans 6:5-9 , for all our troubles here are producing eternal glory in our relationship with Jesus ii corinthians 4:17 . Every tear is a seed of future joy psalm 126:5-6 hebrews 12:2 . So, we have hope, a sure anticipation that EVERYTHING…everything is being worked out by God to our ultimate good of being like Christ romans 8:28-29 and being with Christ i thessalonians 4:17 . Though He slay me, yet will I surely anticipate good forever from Him job 19:25-27, 13:15 .
For this reason the Gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
my notes:
The last enemy to be destroyed is death.
"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?" The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, Who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
as it is written, "I have made you a father of many nations" in the presence of Him Whom he believed--God, Who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did...
But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
...for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance...
...since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in Heaven. Of this you have heard before in the Word of the Truth, the Gospel...
my notes:
But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our bodies.
For we who live are always being given over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you.
Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, "I believed, and so I spoke," we also believe, and so we also speak, knowing that He Who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. For it is all for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
In Him we have also received an inheritance, because we were predestined according to the plan of the One Who works out everything in agreement with the purpose of His will, so that we who had already put our hope in Christ might bring praise to His glory.
Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
my notes:
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when His glory is revealed.
For if we have been united with Him in a death like His, we shall certainly be united with Him in a resurrection like His.
We know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin.
Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over Him.
For our momentary light affliction is producing for us an absolutely incomparable eternal weight of glory.
Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.
my notes:
We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the Champion Who initiates and perfects our faith. Because of the joy awaiting Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. For God knew His people in advance, and He chose them to become like His Son, so that His Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.
Then, together with them, we who are still alive and remain on the earth will be caught up in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. Then we will be with the Lord forever.
For I know that my Redeemer lives, and at the last He will stand upon the earth. And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God, Whom I shall see for myself, and my eyes shall behold, and not another. My heart {yearns} within me!
Though He slay me, I will hope in Him...
