fear of missing out

section 1

Do we really trust the Lord with our lives ii timothy 1:12  psalm 25:20 ? No, we have to grow in our faith as we’ve already looked at, but what is it we believe about God’s work in orchestrating our lives? What do the Scriptures teach us? We make plans, but our every step is established by the Lord proverbs 16:9  jeremiah 10:23 . So, FOMO’s selfishness (this fear of loss) has such an effect on us because we really don’t believe that God is for us deuteronomy 1:27 , even though He is romans 8:31  jeremiah 29:11 . We need to study and observe jeremiah 22:15-16  that our great God goes before us ephesians 2:10 , with us deuteronomy 31:8 , and even comes behind us isaiah 58:8  psalm 23:6  isaiah 52:12  to make sure that His glorious purposes are accomplished proverbs 16:4  ephesians 1:11-12  despite us ii corinthians 13:8  genesis 50:20 , through us ii timothy 2:20-21  isaiah 10:15  and for us ii corinthians 4:15-17 .

X

ii timothy 1:12 niv

That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet this is no cause for shame, because I know Whom I have believed, and am convinced that He is able to guard what I have entrusted to Him until that day.

X

psalm 25:20 esv

Oh, guard my soul, and deliver me! Let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in You.

my notes:

X

proverbs 16:9 esv

The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps.

X

jeremiah 10:23 esv

I know, O LORD, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.

X

deuteronomy 1:27 niv

You grumbled in your tents and said, "The LORD hates us; so He brought us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us.

X

romans 8:31 niv

What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

X

jeremiah 29:11 nkjv

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.

X

jeremiah 22:15-16 niv

"Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just, so all went well with him. He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know Me?" declares the LORD.

X

ephesians 2:10 esv

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

my notes:

X

deuteronomy 31:8 esv

It is the LORD Who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

X

isaiah 58:8 esv

Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.

X

psalm 23:6 niv

Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

X

isaiah 52:12 esv

For you shall not go out in haste, and you shall not go in flight, for the LORD will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.

X

proverbs 16:4 csb

The LORD has prepared everything for His purpose— even the wicked for the day of disaster.

X

ephesians 1:11-12 esv

In Him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him Who works all things according to the counsel of His will, so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory.

X

ii corinthians 13:8 esv

For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.

my notes:

X

genesis 50:20 nkjv

But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, in order to bring it about as it is this day, to save many people alive.

X

ii timothy 2:20-21 csb

Now in a large house there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also those of wood and clay; some for honorable use and some for dishonorable. So if anyone purifies himself from anything dishonorable, he will be a special instrument, set apart, useful to the Master, prepared for every good work.

X

isaiah 10:15 niv

Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it, or the saw boast against the one who uses it? As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up, or a club brandish the one who is not wood!

X

ii corinthians 4:15-17 nas

For all things are for your sakes, so that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God. Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day. For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison,

my notes:

section 2

Our own discernment is detrimental when we rely on our own understanding of life, people, God, decisions, etc. proverbs 3:5 , but discernment is beneficial when the planks of selfishness and pride are taken out of our vision matthew 7:5  by the depth of insight brought about by the learned habit of loving others (looking out for their eternal interests) from the Truth of the Word philippians 1:9-10  i john 5:2-3 . It is then that we can be confident that we are walking in the triumphant procession of Christ ii corinthians 2:12-14  as we follow Him i john 2:6  luke 9:23-24 , whether it appears that we "succeed" or "fail" ii corinthians 13:6-7  i corinthians 4:10-16 . This goes for supposed "spiritual" pursuits and our "everyday" responsibilities i corinthians 7:29-31  james 1:9-11 ; as everything is for God’s glory i corinthians 10:31 . For as we walk by genuine faith the Lord brings about His goodness…the glory of His fruit ii thessalonians 1:11  john 15:8 , even if all we have done is seemed to have been laboring to no result philippians 2:17-18  isaiah 49:4  i corinthians 15:58 .

X

proverbs 3:5 esv

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

X

matthew 7:5 esv

You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.

X

philippians 1:9-10 niv

And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ,

X

i john 5:2-3 esv

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

X

ii corinthians 2:12-14 esv

When I came to Troas to preach the Gospel of Christ, even though a door was opened for me in the Lord, my spirit was not at rest because I did not find my brother Titus there. So I took leave of them and went on to Macedonia. But thanks be to God, Who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of Him everywhere.

X

i john 2:6 nlt

Those who say they live in God should live their lives as Jesus did.

X

luke 9:23-24 niv

Then He said to them all: "Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow Me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will save it.

X

ii corinthians 13:6-7 niv

And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.

my notes:

X

i corinthians 4:10-16 niv

We are fools for Christ, but you are so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are strong! You are honored, we are dishonored! To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. We have become the scum of the earth, the garbage of the world—right up to this moment. I am writing this not to shame you but to warn you as my dear children. Even if you had ten thousand guardians in Christ, you do not have many fathers, for in Christ Jesus I became your father through the Gospel. Therefore I urge you to imitate me.

X

i corinthians 7:29-31 nlt

But let me say this, dear brothers and sisters: The time that remains is very short. So from now on, those with wives should not focus only on their marriage. Those who weep or who rejoice or who buy things should not be absorbed by their weeping or their joy or their possessions. Those who use the things of the world should not become attached to them. For this world as we know it will soon pass away.

X

james 1:9-11 niv

Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

X

i corinthians 10:31 esv

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

my notes:

X

ii thessalonians 1:11 nlt

So we keep on praying for you, asking our God to enable you to live a life worthy of His call. May He give you the power to accomplish all the good things your faith prompts you to do.

X

john 15:8 esv

By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be My disciples.

X

philippians 2:17-18 esv

Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.

X

isaiah 49:4 csb

But I myself said: I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and futility; yet my vindication is with the LORD, and my reward is with my God.

X

i corinthians 15:58 nlt

So, my dear brothers and sisters, be strong and immovable. Always work enthusiastically for the Lord, for you know that nothing you do for the Lord is ever useless.

my notes:

section 3

Be aware, there is a time for everything ecclesiastes 3:1-8  but being uncertain of the time for every response has us skittish about most decisions deuteronomy 28:66  because we have not yet learned to live out the certainty that comes from Christ’s love i john 3:18-21, 4:16-18 . God orchestrates everything to perfectly align with the Word psalm 119:133  acts 1:16  though we do not always perceive or understand it all ecclesiastes 3:9-11  job 33:14 . Our responsibility is to simply do good NOW ii corinthians 6:1-2  i corinthians 7:17, 24  and not worry about tomorrow’s effects matthew 6:33-34 , as NOW is always the right time to bring a benefit (love) to others john 7:6  titus 3:8 . So, we should just do good as the opportunity presents itself, i.e. when God brings about just the right time galatians 6:9-10  philippians 4:10 .

X

ecclesiastes 3:1-8 niv

There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: a time to be born and a time to die, a time to plant and a time to uproot, a time to kill and a time to heal, a time to tear down and a time to build, a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance, a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them, a time to embrace and a time to refrain from embracing, a time to search and a time to give up, a time to keep and a time to throw away, a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, a time to love and a time to hate, a time for war and a time for peace.

X

deuteronomy 28:66 niv

You will live in constant suspense, filled with dread both night and day, never sure of your life.

my notes:

X

i john 3:18-21, 4:16-18 niv

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. This is how we know that we belong to the truth and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything. Dear friends, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

X

psalm 119:133 nas

Establish my footsteps in Your Word, And do not let any iniquity have dominion over me.

X

acts 1:16 esv

"Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.

my notes:

X

ecclesiastes 3:9-11 esv

What gain has the worker from his toil? I have seen the business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with. He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.

X

job 33:14 nkjv

For God may speak in one way, or in another, Yet man does not perceive it.

X

ii corinthians 6:1-2 esv

Working together with Him, then, we appeal to you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says, "In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you." Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.

X

i corinthians 7:17, 24 niv

Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.

Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.

my notes:

X

matthew 6:33-34 esv

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. "Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

X

john 7:6 nas

So Jesus said to them, "My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.

X

titus 3:8 niv

This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

X

galatians 6:9-10 esv

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

X

philippians 4:10 esv

I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at length you have revived your concern for me. You were indeed concerned for me, but you had no opportunity.

my notes:

section 4

Ours is to selfLESSly discern the need of others in the moment i thessalonians 5:14-15, 18  and entrust the ultimate results to God ephesians 4:15, 29  mark 4:26-29 . We need to remind ourselves that we in ourselves are not effective, no matter what we do or don’t do; it is the Lord Who brings about glorious effects i corinthians 3:7  isaiah 26:12 . Because God is so gracious, we are rewarded by Him based on our effort, not effectiveness i corinthians 3:8 , as we could never be rewarded on our effectiveness as we have no power to bring about effect apart from Jesus Himself john 15:4-5 . Sometimes we will work hard, and others will see the results and sometime we only see the results but have done none of the work john 4:35-38 . What should sustain us and encourage us is being called to the work john 4:34  hebrews 9:14 .

X

i thessalonians 5:14-15, 18 esv

And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone.

...give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

X

ephesians 4:15, 29 niv

Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him Who is the head, that is, Christ.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

my notes:

X

mark 4:26-29 niv

He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. All by itself the soil produces grain—first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come."

X

i corinthians 3:7 niv

So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, Who makes things grow.

X

isaiah 26:12 niv

LORD, You establish peace for us; all that we have accomplished You have done for us.

X

i corinthians 3:8 niv

The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.

my notes:

X

john 15:4-5 niv

Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.

X

john 4:35-38 niv

Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.

X

john 4:34 nlt

Then Jesus explained: "My nourishment comes from doing the will of God, Who sent Me, and from finishing His work.

X

hebrews 9:14 csb

...how much more will the blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God?

my notes:

section 5

So, it is given to us to examine ourselves, knowing we all have already fallen short of God’s glory romans 3:23 . We are to examine ourselves to seek to do right and come in line with the Truth rather than resist it ii corinthians 13:5-8 . In this way, walking in this path, we build our faith to have confidence in God to shepherd our lives and thus we need not suffer under the fear of loss luke 12:22-35 .

X

romans 3:23 esv

...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God...

X

ii corinthians 13:5-8 esv

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.

my notes:

X

luke 12:22-35 niv

Then Jesus said to His disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?

Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will He clothe you—you of little faith!

And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning,
