inexpressible joy
section 1
There are blessings of God that are beyond our ability to properly describe with our words ii corinthians 9:15 , and so when such deep encounters grow within us, we can only describe them in spiritual words with spiritual meaning romans 8:26 i corinthians 2:13 . This exceeding glory of knowing Jesus can only be described with words like inexpressible…as in inexpressible joy i peter 1:8 . But just because we cannot express it, does not mean we cannot grow to experience it, if we understand what we should be faith-fully anticipating.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.
my notes:
When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.
...though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, but believe in Him, you greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory,

section 2
This joy from Jesus is our secure refuge nehemiah 8:10 in the midst of the sorrows of affliction for in Jesus our hope is secure hebrews 6:19 in that we can grow to be fully confident that the disciplines of suffering hebrews 12:7 are temporary yet fruitful hebrews 12:11 psalm 126:5-6 psalm 30:5 in that all our sufferings come to pass into the increasing, everlasting completion of our joy james 1:2-4 hebrews 12:1-2 .
Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength."
We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain...
Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father?
No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.
my notes:
Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy. Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.
For His anger lasts only a moment, but His favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

section 3
This is accomplished by the Lord in us as we learn to imitate His love for God and others by obeying His Word john 17:13-19 i peter 1:22 . The joy from going from a selfish sinner to a selfLESS lover is the new life romans 6:4 Christ gives us job 33:23-28 . For when we learn to love God and people, they become a joy i thessalonians 2:19-20 philippians 4:1 isaiah 65:18 to us AS WE SERVE PEOPLE’S NEEDS matthew 25:21 . Our hearts become full of love so that the joy of serving souls has no bounds ii corinthians 7:3-4 . And even more so, this exceeding joy somehow finds a way to increase when the souls we serve respond to God john 3:29-30 philippians 2:2 ii corinthians 7:7, 13, 15-16 iii john 3-4 . These two principles meet together in one wondrous joy when we recognize God’s work in other souls as our own souls remain in the presence of God i thessalonians 3:9 .
I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of My joy within them. I have given them Your Word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. My prayer is not that You take them out of the world but that You protect them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. Sanctify them by the Truth; Your Word is Truth. As You sent Me into the world, I have sent them into the world. For them I sanctify Myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart.
my notes:
We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
Yet if there is an angel at their side, a {mediator} one out of a thousand, sent to tell them how to be upright, and he is gracious to that person and says to God, ‘Spare them from going down to the pit; I have found a ransom for them— let their flesh be renewed like a child’s; let them be restored as in the days of their youth’— then that person can pray to God and find favor with Him, they will see God’s face and shout for joy; He will restore them to full well-being. And they will go to others and say, ‘I have sinned, I have perverted what is right, but I did not get what I deserved. God has delivered me from going down to the pit, and I shall live to enjoy the light of life.’
For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when He comes? Is it not you? Indeed, you are our glory and joy.
Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.
my notes:
But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.
"His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant! You were faithful over a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Share your master’s joy.’
I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you. I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged; in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.
The bride belongs to the bridegroom. The friend who attends the bridegroom waits and listens for him, and is full of joy when he hears the bridegroom’s voice. That joy is mine, and it is now complete. He must become greater; I must become less.
then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind.
my notes:
and not only by his coming, but also by the comfort with which he was comforted in you, as he reported to us your longing, your mourning, your zeal for me; so that I rejoiced even more.
For this reason we have been comforted. And besides our comfort, we rejoiced even much more for the joy of Titus, because his spirit has been refreshed by you all.
His affection abounds all the more toward you, as he remembers the obedience of you all, how you received him with fear and trembling. I rejoice that in everything I have confidence in you.
It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.
How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we have in the presence of our God because of you?
my notes:
section 4
This inexpressible joy of Jesus seems to be temperamentally unreliable for most of us Christians as joy that is described Biblically as increasing and eternal is experienced as arbitrary and erratic galatians 4:15 . This is because we think of joy as a mere emotion or circumstantially based experience rather than a relational effect psalm 16:11 of being in true fellowship with the Holy Spirit acts 13:52 galatians 5:22 . You can have the greatest circumstances psalm 4:6-7 , but if Christ is not present in a relational way, there can be no genuine joy ecclesiastes 2:25 john 16:16, 22 . For inexpressible joy IS the genuine relationship one has with the Lord acts 2:28 matthew 9:15 . Jesus Himself is the ever flowing well of joy isaiah 12:2-3 .
Where is that joyful and grateful spirit you felt then? I am sure you would have taken out your own eyes and given them to me if it had been possible.
You make known to me the path of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence, with eternal pleasures at Your right hand.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control..
my notes:
Many are asking, "Who can show us anything good?" Let the light of Your face shine on us, LORD. You have put more joy in my heart than they have when their grain and new wine abound.
Jesus went on to say, "In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me."
So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
You have made known to me the paths of life; You will fill me with joy in Your presence.’
Jesus answered, "How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn while he is with them? The time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; then they will fast.
Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD Himself, is my strength and my defense; He has become my salvation." With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

section 5
The seemingly elusive, temperamental nature of joy is not the nature of joy at all, but rather the lack of our own maturity to continue to remain in the relational presence of God psalm 119:176 . We think it is the circumstances that change our joy, but rather it is our own fickle heart that strays from the One Who is joy isaiah 53:6 hebrews 3:10 . We abandon joy, but we only perceive the loss of joy, as if it abandoned us ii chronicles 15:2 because of our fixation on the circumstances around us matthew 14:30 . But in Truth it is we who have wandered away i timothy 6:10 , and yet we can come back to Jesus and have joy once again as we walk i peter 2:25 . We can have Christ’s joy within us…increasing within us. How? By remaining in His relational presence…walking with Him…that is, walking in the path of Biblical love. Obey His commands from the inside out and you will have joy ever increasing in your life john 15:9-14 that is never subject to circumstance habakkuk 3:17-19 . For joy is not the pleasure of the circumstance but the worth of the One you love psalm 16:2-3 song of songs 5:16 .
I have strayed like a lost sheep. Seek Your servant, for I have not forgotten Your commands.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
my notes:
That is why I was angry with that generation; I said, ‘Their hearts are always going astray, and they have not known My ways.’
He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with Him. If you seek Him, He will be found by you, but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you.
But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!"
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
For "you were like sheep going astray," but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
my notes:
As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Now remain in My love. If you keep My commands, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commands and remain in His love. I have told you this so that My joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are My friends if you do what I command.
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to tread on the heights. For the director of music. On my stringed instruments.
I say to the LORD, "You are my Lord; I have no good apart from You." As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight.
His mouth is sweetness. He is absolutely desirable. This is my love, and this is my friend, young women of Jerusalem.
