romans 14:1-15:3
i corinthians 8
i corinthians 9:19-11:1

section 1

A person must be fully convinced romans 14:5  what he is doing is accepted by the Lord. If you are not fully convinced on a gray area decision, it is now sin to you personally romans 14:14  because you doubt God’s acceptance of it romans 14:23 .

X

romans 14:5 niv

One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.

X

romans 14:14 niv

I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean.

X

romans 14:23 niv

But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.

my notes:

section 2

Do not judge other’s decisions on gray/disputable issues romans 14:1-4, 10-13  as those types of issues are a matter of individual consciences before the Lord romans 14:12  proverbs 4:23 . What is an area of weakness or sin for one may not be for another i corinthians 10:29-30 .

X

romans 14:1-4, 10-13 esv

As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions. One person believes he may eat anything, while the weak person eats only vegetables. Let not the one who eats despise the one who abstains, and let not the one who abstains pass judgment on the one who eats, for God has welcomed him. Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another? It is before his own master that he stands or falls. And he will be upheld, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

Why do you pass judgment on your brother? Or you, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, "As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God." So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother.

my notes:

X

romans 14:12 esv

So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.

X

proverbs 4:23 niv

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

X

i corinthians 10:29-30 niv

I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for?

my notes:

section 3

Do not strengthen others to sin against their own conscience jeremiah 23:14  by your thoughtless use or advocacy of your own freedoms romans 14:15-16, 22 ; inciting thoughts like, "If he can get away with it, then so can I" i corinthians 8:10-11 . Do not make it harder for others to keep a clear conscience before the Lord i corinthians 8:9  romans 14:13 . Do not think because you are free others are; put others’ needs above your own i corinthians 8:13, 10:24  philippians 2:3-4 . Be careful to do what leads others towards Christ, not away from Him luke 11:23  ii corinthians 6:3 .

X

jeremiah 23:14 niv

And among the prophets of Jerusalem I have seen something horrible: They commit adultery and live a lie. They strengthen the hands of evildoers, so that not one of them turns from their wickedness. They are all like Sodom to Me; the people of Jerusalem are like Gomorrah."

X

romans 14:15-16, 22 nas

For if because of food your brother is hurt, you are no longer walking according to love. Do not destroy with your food him for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let what is for you a good thing be spoken of as evil;

The faith which you have, have as your own conviction before God. Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves.

X

i corinthians 8:10-11 nas

For if someone sees you, who have knowledge, dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience, if he is weak, be strengthened to eat things sacrificed to idols? For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died.

X

i corinthians 8:9 niv

Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

X

romans 14:13 nas

Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way.

X

i corinthians 8:13, 10:24 nas

Therefore, if food causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause my brother to stumble.

Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.

X

philippians 2:3-4 niv

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

X

luke 11:23 niv

Whoever is not with Me is against Me, and whoever does not gather with Me scatters.

X

ii corinthians 6:3 niv

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited.

my notes:

section 4

Don’t give unbelievers an excuse to reject Christ because of how you live i corinthians 10:23-11:1 . Be careful to be wise towards them colossians 4:5-6  so that you do not give unnecessary offense matthew 17:24-27  romans 12:17 , Gospel confusion galatians 2:5  i corinthians 8:4-9 , unwarranted obstacles i corinthians 9:19-22  acts 15:28  or worse, a cause to blaspheme God romans 2:17-24, 14:16 . This applies even in gray issues, i.e.: alcohol, entertainment, voting, styles, diets, financial choices, jobs, hobbies, etc. We should instead aim to make Christ attractive to unbelievers titus 2:10  by our we conduct ourselves even on gray issues ii corinthians 4:2, 6:3-4 .

X

i corinthians 10:23-11:1 niv

"I have the right to do anything," you say—but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others. Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, for, "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it." If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience? If I take part in the meal with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of something I thank God for? So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Do not cause anyone to stumble, whether Jews, Greeks or the church of God—even as I try to please everyone in every way. For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

my notes:

X

colossians 4:5-6 niv

Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

X

matthew 17:24-27 niv

After Jesus and His disciples arrived in Capernaum, the collectors of the two-drachma temple tax came to Peter and asked, "Doesn’t your Teacher pay the temple tax?"

"Yes, He does," he replied.

When Peter came into the house, Jesus was the first to speak. "What do you think, Simon?" He asked. "From whom do the kings of the earth collect duty and taxes—from their own children or from others?"

"From others," Peter answered.

"Then the children are exempt," Jesus said to him. "But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for My tax and yours."

X

romans 12:17 nkjv

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men.

X

galatians 2:5 niv

We did not give in to them for a moment, so that the Truth of the Gospel might be preserved for you.

my notes:

X

i corinthians 8:4-9 niv

So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that "An idol is nothing at all in the world" and that "There is no God but One." For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from Whom all things came and for Whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through Whom all things came and through Whom we live. But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled. But food does not bring us near to God; we are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do. Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

X

i corinthians 9:19-22 niv

Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some.

X

acts 15:28 nkjv

For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:

my notes:

X

romans 2:17-24, 14:16 niv

Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth—you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? As it is written: "God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you."

Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil.

X

titus 2:10 niv

and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.

X

ii corinthians 4:2, 6:3-4 niv

Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; we do not use deception, nor do we distort the word of God. On the contrary, by setting forth the truth plainly we commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God.

We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way…

my notes:

section 5

Don’t make your questionable decisions a public matter for your own validation romans 14:22 . If it is acceptable to God that should be enough for us john 5:44  and we must be mindful that not all have the same conscience i corinthians 8:6-7 , and our validation is not from other’s agreement on our own conscience, but on our walk with the Lord i corinthians 8:8  romans 14:4 . So, keep Christ’s interests in mind philippians 2:20-21 ; do not cause someone else to stumble over your desire to have your knowledgeable freedom confirmed and validated by others proverbs 12:23  i corinthians 8:11 . Be careful. You don’t need to be right i corinthians 6:7 , you need to be righteous by being more concerned about another’s relationship with the Lord than their particular perception of your conscience ii corinthians 13:7 .

X

romans 14:22 nas

The prudent keep their knowledge to themselves, but a fool’s heart blurts out folly.

i corinthians 8:11 nas

For through your knowledge he who is weak is ruined, the brother for whose sake Christ died.

X

i corinthians 6:7 nkjv

Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated

X

ii corinthians 13:7 niv

Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong—not so that people will see that we have stood the test but so that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed.

Be aware there are seasons to the matters of our heart ecclesiastes 3:1 . When your faith is strong you may experience more freedom to enjoy life’s pleasures psalm 119:45  galatians 5:13  ecclesiastes 2:24-25, 3:12-13, 5:18-19 , but when your faith is weak you may experience a need for more restrictions romans 14:2  song of songs 8:9  hosea 2:5-7  i corinthians 9:27  mark 9:43 . So, do not set a false law for yourself, but respond truthfully to what your heart really needs in the moment lamentations 3:40 . If we are strong in faith and walking with the Lord…we are blessed in what we approve romans 14:22 , but if we find our faith weak and violated we need to repent no matter how we assessed ourselves at a different time revelation 3:1-3 . Conscience issues, disputable matter, gray issues within our own self are transient by their very nature because they based on the fluctuating issues of the heart proverbs 4:23  hosea 6:4  i peter 2:25 . For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

my notes:

X

ecclesiastes 2:24-25, 3:12-13, 5:18-19 niv

A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without Him, who can eat or find enjoyment?

I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.

This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.

X

romans 14:2 niv

Their mother has been unfaithful and has conceived them in disgrace. She said, ‘I will go after my lovers, who give me my food and my water, my wool and my linen, my olive oil and my drink.’ Therefore I will block her path with thornbushes; I will wall her in so that she cannot find her way. She will chase after her lovers but not catch them; she will look for them but not find them. Then she will say, ‘I will go back to my husband as at first, for then I was better off than now.’

Instead, I discipline my body and bring it under strict control, so that after preaching to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of Him Who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of My God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

Are You Being Humble With God In Your Freedom?micah 6:8
Are You Being Careful to Do Right Yourself In Your Choices?micah 6:8
Are You Giving Slack Towards Others In Their Freedom?micah 6:8

If you can answer “YES” to these questions, then- HALLELUJAH! You should be at peace and free walking in a gray area. If “NO”- Your heart needs to repent and your way needs to be corrected. The questionable choice is no longer gray, it is black and white, GOOD and EVIL. Because you are no longer acting in love romans 14:15 . Repent of what is an offense to God.

X
