section 1

Conscience is a God given, innate romans 2:15  awareness of there being right and wrong that is shaped ii corinthians 1:12  by the various standards we are taught, practice and believe i corinthians 8:4-7, 10:25-29 ; by it we personally judge ourselves romans 2:14-15 . But because we are corrupt people this is currently an imperfect mechanism as it can be clear but still may not be innocent i corinthians 4:4  ecclesiastes 5:1  hosea 4:6  and can be troubled but actually innocent i john 3:18-20 . So, it must be truly cleansed hebrews 9:9, 14  and retrained in the Truth of God’s Word luke 11:33-36  psalm 119:105  while not being made callous by the continual violation of it titus 1:15  ephesians 4:18-19 . In the end a truly clear conscience is cleared when it puts the Truth to action i john 3:18-19 , being genuinely set on love, that is the self-sacrificial good of others and the glory of the Lord i corinthians 10:24, 31 . And still on the matter of gray issues, any opposing opinion/desire to that of agape love is no longer a gray area, but a matter of idolatry mark 8:33-35 .

They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)

ii corinthians 1:12 niv

Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace.

i corinthians 8:4-7, 10:25-29 niv

So then, about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that "An idol is nothing at all in the world" and that "There is no God but One."

For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many "gods" and many "lords"), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from Whom all things came and for Whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through Whom all things came and through Whom we live.

But not everyone possesses this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat sacrificial food they think of it as having been sacrificed to a god, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.

Eat anything sold in the meat market without raising questions of conscience, for, "The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it." If an unbeliever invites you to a meal and you want to go, eat whatever is put before you without raising questions of conscience. But if someone says to you, "This has been offered in sacrifice," then do not eat it, both for the sake of the one who told you and for the sake of conscience. I am referring to the other person’s conscience, not yours. For why is my freedom being judged by another’s conscience?

X

romans 2:14-15 niv

(Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.)

my notes:

X

i corinthians 4:4 niv

My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord Who judges me.

X

ecclesiastes 5:1 niv

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. Go near to listen rather than to offer the sacrifice of fools, who do not know that they do wrong.

X

hosea 4:6 niv

...My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.

X

i john 3:18-20 niv

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. This is how we know that we belong to the Truth and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence: If our hearts condemn us, we know that God is greater than our hearts, and He knows everything.

X

hebrews 9:9, 14 niv

This is an illustration for the present time, indicating that the gifts and sacrifices being offered were not able to clear the conscience of the worshiper.

How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, Who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!

my notes:

X

luke 11:33-36 niv

No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light. Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy, your whole body also is full of light.

But when they are unhealthy, your body also is full of darkness. See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you."

X

psalm 119:105 niv

Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.

X

titus 1:15 niv

To the pure, all things are pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.

X

ephesians 4:18-19 niv

They are darkened in their understanding and separated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardening of their hearts. Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, and they are full of greed.

my notes:

i john 3:18-19 niv

Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. This is how we know that we belong to the Truth and how we set our hearts at rest in His presence:

X

i corinthians 10:24, 31 niv

No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.

X

mark 8:33-35 niv

But when Jesus turned and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" He said. "You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns."

Then He called the crowd to Him along with His disciples and said: "Whoever wants to be My disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow Me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me and for the Gospel will save it.

section 2

A gray/disputable/conscience issue is a personal hang-up or dilemma of the validity or appropriateness of a matter that is not taught for or against in Scripture but rather is addressed as a matter of the heart/relationship with the Lord romans 14:1-5 , not a matter of a sin or a righteous deed but conditional on one’s own current relationship with the Lord romans 14:6-8  numbers 36:6  i corinthians 7:24, 36, 39, 35 . This is much like an opinion but is stronger than mere preference as the person inwardly doubts or is uncertain to God’s approval or disapproval of the conditions of the matter at hand john 7:6  i chronicles 12:32 . One’s take may be different than another’s acts 15:36-40 . Neither is necessarily right or wrong, but rather the conditions make for different seasons, responses, struggles, experiences, upbringing, sensitivities, needs, opinions, strengths and weaknesses ecclesiastes 3:1  i corinthians 16:12 . Such differences need not be a reason for contention but rather it should foster careful consideration for each other’s needs in love romans 14:13, 19  i corinthians 10:23-24  ephesians 4:29 .

X

romans 14:1-5 niv

Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them.

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand. One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.

my notes:

X

romans 14:6-8 niv

Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

X

numbers 36:6 niv

This is what the LORD commands for Zelophehad’s daughters: They may marry anyone they please as long as they marry within their father’s tribal clan.

X

i corinthians 7:24, 36, 39, 35 niv

Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.

If anyone is worried that he might not be acting honorably toward the virgin he is engaged to, and if his passions are too strong and he feels he ought to marry, he should do as he wants. He is not sinning. They should get married.

A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.

I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.

my notes:

john 7:6 niv

Therefore Jesus told them, "My time is not yet here; for you any time will do.

Some time later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing." Barnabas wanted to take John, also called Mark, with them, but Paul did not think it wise to take him, because he had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not continued with them in the work. They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord.

X

ecclesiastes 3:1 esv

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

my notes:

i corinthians 16:12 nas

But concerning Apollos our brother, I encouraged him greatly to come to you with the brethren; and it was not at all his desire to come now, but he will come when he has opportunity.

X

romans 14:13, 19 nas

Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather determine this—not to put an obstacle or a stumbling block in a brother’s way.

So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.

X

i corinthians 10:23-24 niv

"I have the right to do anything," you say—but not everything is beneficial. "I have the right to do anything"—but not everything is constructive. No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

X

ephesians 4:29 niv

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
