purposeful

section 1

Without a continuous eye on colossians 3:1-2  hebrews 12:2  the ultimate purpose of communication i corinthians 10:31  ephesians 4:29  romans 14:19  our communication will inevitably lead to sin proverbs 10:19 . As we are naturally bent romans 3:10-14  to have our own foolish impulses prompt proverbs 18:2  our communication which leads to self-serving psalm 73:7-9  yet self-defeating madness ecclesiastes 10:12-14  psalm 109:16-20  matthew 12:36-37 .

X

colossians 3:1-2 esv

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.

X

hebrews 12:2 niv

...fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him He endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

X

i corinthians 10:31 esv

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.

my notes:

X

ephesians 4:29 niv

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

X

romans 14:19 nas

So then we pursue the things which make for peace and the building up of one another.

X

proverbs 10:19 nas

When there are many words, transgression is unavoidable, But he who restrains his lips is wise.

X

romans 3:10-14 niv

As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands; there is no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one." "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit." "The poison of vipers is on their lips." "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness."

X

proverbs 18:2 esv

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion.

X

psalm 73:7-9 niv

From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth.

my notes:

X

ecclesiastes 10:12-14 niv

Words from the mouth of the wise are gracious, but fools are consumed by their own lips. At the beginning their words are folly; at the end they are wicked madness— and fools multiply words. No one knows what is coming— who can tell someone else what will happen after them?

X

psalm 109:16-20 esv

For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and the brokenhearted, to put them to death. He loved to curse; let curses come upon him! He did not delight in blessing; may it be far from him! He clothed himself with cursing as his coat; may it soak into his body like water, like oil into his bones! May it be like a garment that he wraps around him, like a belt that he puts on every day! May this be the reward of my accusers from the LORD, of those who speak evil against my life!

X

matthew 12:36-37 esv

I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."

my notes:

section 2

This sinfulness is not necessarily done intentionally ecclesiastes 5:1  psalm 36:2-3 , but we should be aware that even when we want to do good we are more apt to do harm anyway romans 7:18  matthew 12:34  if we are not pursuing God’s purpose intentionally ii timothy 2:22 . If you are speaking from yourself and for yourself, it is a good bet that you are harming others even if what you are saying is technically true and factual psalm 50:16-19 . For selfishness is not the point of the Truth but rather Truth unto the love of God and love of others should be the purpose of our communication ephesians 4:15 .

X

ecclesiastes 5:1 esv

Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil.

X

psalm 36:2-3 niv

In their own eyes they flatter themselves too much to detect or hate their sin. The words of their mouths are wicked and deceitful; they fail to act wisely or do good.

X

romans 7:18 csb

For I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh. For the desire to do what is good is with me, but there is no ability to do it.

my notes:

X

matthew 12:34 esv

Brood of vipers! How can you speak good things when you are evil? For the mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart.

X

ii timothy 2:22 esv

Flee from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

X

psalm 50:16-19 niv

But to the wicked person, God says: "What right have you to recite my laws or take My covenant on your lips? You hate My instruction and cast My words behind you. When you see a thief, you join with him; you throw in your lot with adulterers. You use your mouth for evil and harness your tongue to deceit.

X

ephesians 4:15 nlt

Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ, Who is the head of His body, the church.

my notes:

section 3

So, we should communicate with the purpose of pleasing the Lord ii corinthians 5:9  by being His ambassadors of Truth and Love i peter 4:11  ii corinthians 5:20 ; avoiding any kind of deception, even supposedly on His behalf job 13:7-10 , and seeking the true good of those you are communicating with luke 6:27-36  proverbs 12:18  proverbs 15:4  proverbs 11:30 . This is the purpose of godly communication.

X

ii corinthians 5:9 niv

So we make it our goal to please Him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

X

i peter 4:11 nlt

Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God Himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to Him forever and ever! Amen.

X

ii corinthians 5:20 esv

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

my notes:

X

job 13:7-10 nlt

"Are you defending God with lies? Do you make your dishonest arguments for His sake? Will you slant your testimony in His favor? Will you argue God’s case for Him? What will happen when He finds out what you are doing? Can you fool Him as easily as you fool people? No, you will be in trouble with Him if you secretly slant your testimony in His favor.

X

luke 6:27-36 esv

"But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.

To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic either.

Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back.

And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

"If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount.

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for He is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

my notes:

X

proverbs 12:18 esv

There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.

X

proverbs 15:4 csb

The tongue that heals is a tree of life, but a devious tongue breaks the spirit.

X

proverbs 11:30 nas

The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, And he who is wise wins souls.
