who is Jesus Christ?

matthew 16:15-17

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” 16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” 17 And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.

It is essential for us to understand Who Jesus really is as that establishes our relationship with Him, the Father and the Holy Spirit. If we do not know Who Jesus is then we cannot hope to know God since Jesus is God john 14:6-11 .

supporting scriptures

john 14:6-11

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”

8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

my notes:

Jesus is fully God

Jesus is God the Son which in that title alone is an expression of Him to be one with God john 5:17-18 just as a son of peace would be a person who is peace-FULL or a son of anger would be an angry-FULL person colossians 1:19 colossians 2:9 . Since Jesus is fully God in the body He is the revealing message of God to us john 1:1-5 showing the essential nature of Who God is; the God of grace and truth john 1:9-18 exodus 34:5-6 .

supporting scriptures

john 5:17-18

But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

colossians 1:19

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell...

colossians 2:9

john 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

my notes:

john 1:9-18

The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. 15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’”) 16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. 17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.

exodus 34:5-6

The Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. 6 The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness...

my notes:

Jesus claimed to be God

Jesus clearly claimed to be one with God john 10:30 and so other Scriptures confirm for the believer that He is our God and Savior titus 2:13 . He further exhibited this by accepting praise as God isaiah 48:11 john 20:28-29 which no righteous being would do if he were not God revelation 19:9-10 revelation 22:8-9 . And by declaring Himself the “I Am” He used the literal, familiar, introductory name of Jehovah God to Moses for Himself john 8:57-58 exodus 3:13-14 .

john 20:28-29

Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

revelation 19:9-10

And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.” 10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

revelation 22:8-9

I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me, 9 but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”

john 8:57-58

So the Jews said to him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” 58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” 59 So they picked up stones to throw at him, but Jesus hid himself and went out of the temple.

exodus 3:13-14

Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” 14 God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”

my notes:

His divine role

Jesus is God because within the Trinity of God He is the Creator john 1:3 and Sustainer hebrews 1:3 of creation proving Himself through God-only miracles job 9:8 john 6:16-19 john 20:30-31 that He as God can forgive sins mark 2:9-11 , judge acts 17:31 , and give life as God pleases john 5:19-22 . It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were frightened.

john 20:30-31

Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

mark 2:9-11

my notes:

Jesus is fully man

It would seem it wouldn’t matter if Jesus is man or not to us. Just a theological point of interest and debate. Why does it matter? It matters because of our relationship to God through Him. It is very important to believe and understand that Jesus was fully man as well because His Godhood and Manhood is the bridge of the gap of our relationship. He is our kinsman redeemer hebrews 2:17 Who has mediated reconciliation between God and man i timothy 2:5-6 because He is God AND man colossians 1:19-22 . He can truly sympathize with us in our trials of temptations because He also has gone through them hebrews 2:16-18 luke 4:1-13 and He is our helper in it because He relates to us in it hebrews 4:14-16 psalm 68:19 so we may also relate with Him in them.

i timothy 2:5-6

For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time.

colossians 1:19-22

For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, 22 he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him...

hebrews 2:16-18

For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

luke 4:1-13

And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, he was hungry. 3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone.’” 5 And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 6 and said to him, “To you I will give all this authority and their glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. 7 If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” 8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written,

“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,

and him only shall you serve.’”

9 And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,

to guard you,’

11 and

“‘On their hands they will bear you up,

lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

12 And Jesus answered him, “It is said, You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” 13 And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.

hebrews 4:14-16

Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

So He built a relationship with us by perfectly and practically knowing our weaknesses hebrews 2:10-11 hebrews 5:8-9 psalm 103:14 . He had to mature in body and mind, just like us luke 2:40 . He got hungry, just like us matthew 4:2 . He got thirsty, just like us john 19:28 . He got physically tired, just like us john 4:6 matthew 8:24 . Jesus the God-Man

Jesus is the perfect mediator and interceder for us hebrews 9:24-28 because He is fully God and man hebrews 7:25-26 . hebrews 9:24-28

For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf. 25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. 27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

hebrews 7:25-26

Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
