Why Be Generous?

section 1

Why do we give to the Lord? Is it to enable our church to continue romans 14:4  i corinthians 3:7 ? Is it because people’s needs won’t be met without our generosity esther 4:14 ? Maybe God needs our resources psalm 50:7-15  to accomplish His will isaiah 10:15 ?

X

romans 14:4 niv

Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

X

i corinthians 3:7 niv

So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, Who makes things grow.

X

esther 4:14 esv

For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

my notes:

X

psalm 50:7-15 niv

Listen, My people, and I will speak; I will testify against you, Israel: I am God, your God. I bring no charges against you concerning your sacrifices or concerning your burnt offerings, which are ever before Me.

I have no need of a bull from your stall or of goats from your pens, for every animal of the forest is Mine, and the cattle on a thousand hills. I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are Mine.

If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is Mine, and all that is in it. Do I eat the flesh of bulls or drink the blood of goats?

Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor Me.

X

isaiah 10:15 niv

Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it, or the saw boast against the one who uses it? As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up, or a club brandish the one who is not wood!

my notes:

section 2

Yes, God delights in meeting needs through His people philippians 4:18  ii corinthians 8:13-15 , but that is not because He has need of our resources. He doesn’t need us to give. He knows our need. We have need to give.

X

philippians 4:18 nlt

At the moment I have all I need—and more! I am generously supplied with the gifts you sent me with Epaphroditus. They are a sweet-smelling sacrifice that is acceptable and pleasing to God.

X

ii corinthians 8:13-15 esv

For I do not mean that others should be eased and you burdened, but that as a matter of fairness your abundance at the present time should supply their need, so that their abundance may supply your need, that there may be fairness. As it is written, "Whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack."

my notes:

section 3

We need to give because we in our natural selves value the wrong things luke 16:15 , which puts us on a path of ever-increasing cravings but ever-decreasing satisfaction ephesians 4:19  ecclesiastes 5:10 . We look for solutions in our own understanding proverbs 3:5  ii corinthians 1:12 , becoming self-reliant habakkuk 1:11  ii corinthians 1:9  and then foolishly isolated proverbs 18:1 . Money subtly becomes our god, our love, our pursuit matthew 6:24  which will never satisfy isaiah 55:2 . The love of the things of this world takes away from life i john 2:15-17 , inhibits our maturity luke 8:14 , and leads us into harm, grief, ruin, destruction, loss of the way, etc. i timothy 6:9-10 ; while seeking the Lord relieves our burden matthew 6:25-34  matthew 11:28-30 , gives us the true, great riches of godly satisfaction i timothy 6:6-7  and provides us with everything we need for our enjoyment i timothy 6:17  romans 8:32  ecclesiastes 2:24-25 .

X

luke 16:15 niv

He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

X

ephesians 4:19 csb

They became callous and gave themselves over to promiscuity for the practice of every kind of impurity with a desire for more and more.

my notes:

X

ecclesiastes 5:10 niv

Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.

X

proverbs 3:5 csb

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding...

X

ii corinthians 1:12 niv

Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, with integrity and godly sincerity. We have done so, relying not on worldly wisdom but on God’s grace.

X

habakkuk 1:11 esv

Then they sweep by like the wind and go on, guilty men, whose own might is their god!

X

ii corinthians 1:9 esv

Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God Who raises the dead.

my notes:

X

proverbs 18:1 csb

One who isolates himself pursues selfish desires; he rebels against all sound wisdom.

X

matthew 6:24 esv

No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

X

isaiah 55:2 esv

Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to Me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food.

X

i john 2:15-17 esv

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.

X

luke 8:14 niv

The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

my notes:

X

i timothy 6:9-10 niv

Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

X

matthew 6:25-34 esv

Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

my notes:

X

matthew 11:28-30 esv

Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you, and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy, and My burden is light."

X

i timothy 6:6-7 esv

But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.

X

i timothy 6:17 nlt

Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, Who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.

X

romans 8:32 esv

He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him graciously give us all things?

X

ecclesiastes 2:24-25 nlt

So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from Him?

God accomplishes this in us intentionally in unconventional ways ii corinthians 4:7-9  ii corinthians 12:9-10  so that we seek Him isaiah 55:6-8  jeremiah 2:10-13  and develop a relationship with Him Who is the All in All i corinthians 15:28  ephesians 1:23 and thus be able to enjoy everything because of Him Who is greater than all things ecclesiastes 2:24-25  philippians 3:8 . We walk by faith not by tangible resources ii corinthians 5:7 .

X

ii corinthians 4:7-9 niv

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

X

ii corinthians 12:9-10 csb

But He said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness." Therefore, I will most gladly boast all the more about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may reside in me. So I take pleasure in weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and in difficulties, for the sake of Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

X

isaiah 55:6-8 esv

Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, that He may have compassion on him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon. For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the LORD.

my notes:

X

jeremiah 2:10-13 esv

For cross to the coasts of Cyprus and see, or send to Kedar and examine with care; see if there has been such a thing. Has a nation changed its gods, even though they are no gods?

But My people have changed their glory for that which does not profit. Be appalled, O heavens, at this; be shocked, be utterly desolate, declares the LORD, for My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water.

X

i corinthians 15:28 esv

When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself will also be subjected to Him Who put all things in subjection under Him, that God may be all in all.

section 5

This is why we give to the Lord our tangible resources. We sacrifice to Him valuables that would not make sense to give up apart from faith in God romans 12:1  ii corinthians 8:15 . We give to Him only what He has given to us i chronicles 29:14  so to train our heart to rely on God’s love i john 4:16  rather than on our tangible, albeit unreliable, resources i timothy 6:17 , and to take hold of the privilege of a share in the glorious work of God. ii corinthians 8:3-4  matthew 10:41-42  philippians 4:14-15  God counts this as a fragrant offering and sacrifice, which is accounted for philippians 4:17-18  hebrews 6:10  and repaid in greater ways proverbs 11:25  proverbs 19:17  luke 16:10-13  proverbs 8:19 . We exchange the tangible for the greater intangible philippians 3:7-11  proverbs 17:1  proverbs 15:17 .

X

romans 12:1 niv

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.

And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

X

i timothy 6:17 niv

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, Who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

X

ii corinthians 8:3-4 niv

For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.

X

matthew 10:41-42 esv

The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.

X

philippians 4:14-15 esv

Yet it was kind of you to share my trouble. And you Philippians yourselves know that in the beginning of the Gospel, when I left Macedonia, no church entered into partnership with me in giving and receiving, except you only.

X

philippians 4:17-18 niv

Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account. I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.

my notes:

X

hebrews 6:10 esv

For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for His name in serving the saints, as you still do.

X

proverbs 11:25 esv

Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.

X

proverbs 19:17 esv

Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.

X

luke 16:10-13 nlt/niv

If you are faithful in little things, you will be faithful in large ones. But if you are dishonest in little things, you won’t be honest with greater responsibilities. And if you are untrustworthy about worldly wealth, who will trust you with the true riches of heaven?

And if you are not faithful with other people’s things, why should you be trusted with things of your own? No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

X

proverbs 8:19 esv

My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold, and my yield than choice silver.

my notes:

X

philippians 3:7-11 nlt

I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done. Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For His sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with Him.

I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with Himself depends on faith. I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead. I want to suffer with Him, sharing in His death, so that one way or another I will experience the resurrection from the dead!

X

And {Jesus} sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny.

And He called His disciples to Him and said to them, "Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.

"Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD. {Jesus} said also to the man who had invited Him, "When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid. What can I confess to God about my heart’s pursuits?

What is one tangible sacrifice I can make to God?

Where is my faith lacking?

What do I really value?

What do I really enjoy?

What do I fear to lack?

What is a Biblical response to that?

In what way can I/we excel in generosity?
