the gift of singleness

section 1

Every follower of Jesus has purposeful tasks, opportunities and gifts to glorify the Lord and to bless others with Him i corinthians 12:7  i corinthians 3:5 . This comes about in the everyday matthew 6:33-34  "monotony" of God’s orchestration of the time and place you find yourself in acts 17:26-27 . So, as long as it is called today hebrews 3:13 , now is your time and here is the place to respond to the Lord in the circumstances that He has prepared for you to serve Him in ephesians 2:10  ii corinthians 6:1-2  i corinthians 7:17, 19-20, 24 . But in today’s church there has been a disservice of our view of God’s working out of our lives, especially of younger people whose lives we think are the only ones actually still being molded and unfolded. We tend to focus on life, not here and now, but beginning then and there…i.e. when I finally get a career, get married and start a family. While this may be the typical outcome for many, it is not the only template for living a fruitful life unto the Lord. In fact, our Lord Himself never started a biological family of His own but rather cultivated a spiritual family in the Heavenly Father mark 3:33-35  ephesians 3:14-15 . He didn’t have a lasting career or a retirement plan for this world luke 12:32-34 , and He never even established Himself into a house matthew 8:20 . He was, by modern, human sensibilities: a single, homeless vagrant.

X

i corinthians 12:7 niv

Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

X

i corinthians 3:5 niv

What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task.

my notes:

X

matthew 6:33-34 nkjv

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

X

acts 17:26-27 niv84

From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.

X

hebrews 3:13 niv

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called "Today," so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.

X

ephesians 2:10 niv

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

X

ii corinthians 6:1-2 niv

For He says, "In the time of My favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you." I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.

my notes:

X

i corinthians 7:17, 19-20, 24 niv

Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.

Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commands is what counts. Each person should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.

Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.

X

mark 3:33-35 niv

"Who are my mother and my brothers?" he asked. Then he looked at those seated in a circle around him and said, "Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does God’s will is my brother and sister and mother."

X

ephesians 3:14-15 nkjv

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from Whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named...

X

luke 12:32-34 niv

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

X

matthew 8:20 niv

Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has no place to lay His head."

section 2

All humans struggle with living in the here and now as we get distracted with the delusional selfishness of this world’s then and there. But in the church, we tend to especially romanticize and idolize marriage to the point that anything outside of marriage is almost regarded as an unfulfilled life. The apostle Paul would not agree i corinthians 7:8 . Each of us has our tasks and giftedness for serving our Lord. Marriage OR singleness are not circumstances to be rectified but opportunities to respond to the Lord in; each is a gift from God to serve Him i corinthians 7:7 .

X

i corinthians 7:8 esv

To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am.

X

i corinthians 7:7 niv

I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.

my notes:

section 3

Perhaps the problem comes from the fact that we all have at least a season of singleness we start out with, but most in the church aspire, maybe even crave, more…to be married, have kids, etc., and the majority go on to live out a season of marriage. So, the error comes when we think a majority equals right, a majority equals normal, a majority equals fruitful. But it simply isn’t so. Yes, we have been given the privileged right to be married i corinthians 9:5 , but it is not an obligation but an option i corinthians 7:6 . There are some who are called to be single for their whole life matthew 19:11-12 , but we would do well to remember that all of us have been called to be single for at least a season of life. And no matter what gift you have received, single or married, we are all called to be fully devoted to the Lord, which by the way is more natural for the unmarried believer i corinthians 7:32-35 .

X

i corinthians 9:5 niv

Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas?

X

i corinthians 7:6 niv

I say this as a concession, not as a command.

my notes:

X

matthew 19:11-12 niv

Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For there are eunuchs who were born that way, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by others—and there are those who choose to live like eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."

X

i corinthians 7:32-35 niv

I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairshow he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife—and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.

my notes:

section 4

So how should a single follower of Christ respond to God’s orchestration of their life, here and now? Remember, it is not a matter of then and there, but here and now. How should one single person live? How should one live who wishes to remain single vs. the one who wishes to be married?

All people should live holy, godly lives: single, married, widowed, eunuch, parent, child, etc. ii peter 3:11 . But specifically for the single believer- one should learn self-control i corinthians 7:8-9  i thessalonians 4:4 , for single people should learn to rely on God i timothy 5:5  psalm 146:3, 5  as they do not naturally, readily have another human who lifts them up when self-control may be lacking ecclesiastes 4:9-12 . Though none of us can count on others, even a spouse to make us holy micah 7:5 , the single person is graced with the opportunity for a singular focus- without the distractions, responsibilities and needs of a married life i corinthians 7:32-35 ; this one is to put hope in God and talk with Him for help continually i timothy 5:5  i john 4:16 . Yet, one who is single must be careful not to use his/her freedom as a cover up for evil i peter 2:16 , but to be busy in the Lord’s business lest he/she incur judgment for being an idle busybody i timothy 5:11, 13  ii thessalonians 3:11 . The single one should focus on cultivating relationships in the Lord’s family and treating peers (specifically, potential spouses) as siblings i timothy 5:1-2  until a God-given marriage relationship develops song of songs 4:12 . More on that later…

X

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives

my notes:

X

psalm 146:3, 5 niv

Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save.

Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God.

X

ecclesiastes 4:9-12 niv

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

my notes:

X

micah 7:5 niv

Do not trust a neighbor; put no confidence in a friend. Even with the woman who lies in your embrace guard the words of your lips.

X

i corinthians 7:32-35 niv

I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairshow he can please the Lord. As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry.

Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also busybodies who talk nonsense, saying things they ought not to.

section 5

not wanting to be married

The one who finds he/she has no burning desire for marriage i corinthians 7:9 , the instruction is far simpler and the path much clearer i corinthians 7:37-38 . This single one should use his/her life to serve and cultivate the spiritual family as Christ did; gaining parents, siblings and children through the love of Jesus matthew 12:46-50  luke 18:29-30  titus 1:4 . Just as all others are response-able, this is done in the fellowship of the believers’ open hearts ii corinthians 6:11-13, 7:2-3 , discipleship i timothy 1:2 , compassionate ministry philemon 10 , the brotherhood of faith philemon 16  and mutual concern i corinthians 12:25-27 . A single person should devote himself to Christ’s interests in others i corinthians 7:32  philippians 2:20-21 , while believers in the church with natural families should welcome a single person in with equal devotion into their spiritual family i corinthians 7:35  galatians 4:14  i corinthians 12:25  without silly pressure to get married i corinthians 12:4-7, 11 .

Single one, do not take to heart or be resentful of any foolish pressure or thoughtless questions about your single state ecclesiastes 7:21-22 , but be confident in God’s calling on you i corinthians 12:18-21 . The single person should just continually use this gift of unspoken-for-resources to faithfully serve and administer God’s grace to others they have opportunity with i peter 4:10  galatians 6:10 .

X

i corinthians 7:9 csb

But if they do not have self-control, they should marry, since it is better to marry than to burn with desire.

my notes:

X

i corinthians 7:37-38 niv

But the man who has settled the matter in his own mind, who is under no compulsion but has control over his own will, and who has made up his mind not to marry the virgin—this man also does the right thing. So then, he who marries the virgin does right, but he who does not marry her does even better.

X

matthew 12:46-50 niv

While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, His mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to Him. Someone told Him, "Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to You." He replied to him, "Who is My mother, and who are My brothers?" Pointing to His disciples, He said, "Here are My mother and My brothers. For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother and sister and mother."

X

luke 18:29-30 niv

"Truly I tell you," Jesus said to them, "no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life."

X

titus 1:4 niv

my notes:

X

We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange—I speak as to my childrenopen wide your hearts also.

Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you.

so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

my notes:

so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other.

my notes:

X

i corinthians 12:4-7, 11 niv

There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work. Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.

All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and He distributes them to each one, just as He determines.

X

ecclesiastes 7:21-22 niv

Do not pay attention to every word people say, or you may hear your servant cursing you— for you know in your heart that many times you yourself have cursed others.

X

i corinthians 12:18-21 niv

But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as He wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, "I don’t need you!" And the head cannot say to the feet, "I don’t need you!"

X

i peter 4:10 niv

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.

X

galatians 6:10 niv

Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

my notes:

section 6

wanting to be married

Now for the single people who find themselves wanting to marry, the path can be a bit more complicated. One wanting to be married should realize that though these desires are natural romans 1:27  and acting on it is even advisable in cases i timothy 5:14  i corinthians 7:9 . Still, these desires are corrupted in our natural selves i timothy 5:11  romans 7:18-20  and as such should not simply be indulged in galatians 5:13  or pursued i corinthians 7:27 , but rather taken as an opportunity to learn self-control titus 2:5-6  i thessalonians 4:3-6  and to worship the Lord sacrificially with a Heavenly mindset romans 12:1-2 . For who knows what may come about in that desire james 4:13-16  i corinthians 7:16 ? Desire alone does not certify God’s will for your life proverbs 6:25  but is always an opportunity to worship Him sacrificially galatians 5:16-17 .

X

romans 1:27 niv

In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

X

i timothy 5:14 niv

So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander.

X

i corinthians 7:9 csb

But if they do not have self-control, they should marry, since it is better to marry than to burn with desire.

my notes:

X

i timothy 5:11 esv

But refuse to enroll younger widows, for when their passions draw them away from Christ, they desire to marry

X

romans 7:18-20 niv

For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

X

galatians 5:13 esv

For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.

X

i corinthians 7:27 niv

Are you pledged to a woman? Do not seek to be released. Are you free from such a commitment? Do not look for a wife.

X

titus 2:5-6 niv

{younger women}...be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the Word of God. Similarly, encourage the young men to be self-controlled.

X

i thessalonians 4:3-6 niv

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.

X

romans 12:1-2 niv

Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.

X

james 4:13-16 niv

Now listen, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money." Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, "If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that." As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.

X

i corinthians 7:16 niv

How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

X

proverbs 6:25 esv

Do not desire her beauty in your heart, and do not let her capture you with her eyelashes;

X

galatians 5:16-17 niv

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want.

my notes:

section 7

To elaborate, if one finds his/her desires promoting a more typical course towards marriage, one should do so with self-awareness for self-control’s sake i thessalonians 5:6 . A romantic relationship is not advisable to one who has not first learned to control their own immature desires ii timothy 2:22 . Marriage is not a cure for selfishness or impurity; the character you bring into a marriage remains and is not overcome by vows of marriage; rather it is overcome by God’s grace to work out in us the holy sweat of killing the old character and developing Christ’s new character within one’s self ephesians 4:20-24  galatians 2:20 . Marriage is not a cure of immoral cravings proverbs 23:27-28  but rather the legitimate fulfillment of loving desire that has been instructed by God proverbs 5:15-20  song of songs 7:10, 8:6-7  which satisfies the loving proverbs 5:19  song of songs 8:10  but will only inflame the selfish ephesians 4:19  i thessalonians 4:3-6 .

X

i thessalonians 5:6 csb

So then, let us not sleep, like the rest, but let us stay awake and be self-controlled.

X

ii timothy 2:22 niv

Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

my notes:

X

ephesians 4:20-24 niv

That, however, is not the way of life you learned when you heard about Christ and were taught in Him in accordance with the truth that is in Jesus. You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

X

galatians 2:20 niv

I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me.

X

proverbs 23:27-28 niv

for an adulterous woman is a deep pit, and a wayward wife is a narrow well. Like a bandit she lies in wait and multiplies the unfaithful among men.

X

proverbs 5:15-20 niv

Drink water from your own cistern, running water from your own well. Should your springs overflow in the streets, your streams of water in the public squares? Let them be yours alone, never to be shared with strangers. May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love. Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

my notes:

X

song of songs 7:10, 8:6-7 niv

I belong to my beloved, and his desire is for me.

Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. If one were to give all the wealth of one’s house for love, it would be utterly scorned.

X

A loving doe, a graceful deer— may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated with her love.

i thessalonians 4:3-6 niv

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. Self-control is vital for guarding the heart’s inclination towards selfish cravings and destructive actions proverbs 25:28  proverbs 4:23  i thessalonians 4:6 ; while learning self-control song of songs 8:4  has the benefit of preparing one for being a proper lover in marriage i peter 1:13  song of songs 7:13 , physically i corinthians 7:4  song of songs 7:6  and most importantly, spiritually ephesians 5:21-33  song of songs 2:4 .

For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, His body, of which He is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. After all, no one ever hated their own body, but they feed and care for their body, just as Christ does the church—for we are members of His body.

"For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church. However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

craving vs. desire

So, it is important within ourselves to distinguish between craving and desire hebrews 5:13-14 . While these words can be used as synonyms in certain contexts, they also have drastic differences in other uses. For our purposes we are looking at how human cravings i john 2:16-17  are different than godly…God-spurred desires i peter 4:1-2 . How can we tell if we are being selfishly ambition james 3:13-16  ii samuel 13:1-2  or are actually loving another properly song of songs 4:9  i corinthians 7:36 ? We have spoken freely to you, Corinthians, and opened wide our hearts to you. We are not withholding our affection from you, but you are withholding yours from us. As a fair exchange—I speak as to my children—open wide your hearts also.

Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people." Therefore, "Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you." And, "I will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God. Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. widows/widowers

i corinthians 7:39  A widow(er) is free to marry any in the Lord as the death of a spouse releases any bond of commitment of marriage.

i timothy 5:11-14  i corinthians 7:40  Younger widow(er)s would most likely be more blessed to be married and busy with a family, rather than become a busybody. But if one wants to remain independent, she/he is most likely happier still.

As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. X

i corinthians 7:32-35 niv

I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord.
