section 1

There is no one who actually seeks God on their own initiative romans 3:11 . We are all naturally self-seeking romans 2:8 , that is making every effort for our own selves ecclesiastes 6:7 . If we seek God at all it is because God is already reaching out isaiah 65:1  through various means job 33:14  to call us to Himself john 6:65  i john 4:19 . His invitation is not a full revelation of all He is deuteronomy 29:29 , but it is a calling to come and know Him romans 10:21  and to always know Him more hosea 6:3 . His reaching out is a stirring of ourselves to stimulate us to seek Him matthew 22:1-14  and seek the Truth found in Him alone proverbs 25:2  john 14:6 .

romans 3:11 esv

no one understands; no one seeks for God.

romans 2:8 esv

but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

X

ecclesiastes 6:7 esv

All the toil of man is for his mouth, yet his appetite is not satisfied.

my notes:

X

isaiah 65:1 esv

I was ready to be sought by those who did not ask for Me; I was ready to be found by those who did not seek Me. I said, "Here I am, here I am," to a nation that was not called by My name.

job 33:14 niv

For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it.

He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to Me unless the Father has enabled them."

But concerning Israel He says, "All day long I have held out My hands to a disobedient and obstinate people."

X

hosea 6:3 esv

Let us know; let us press on to know the LORD; His going out is sure as the dawn; He will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth."

my notes:

X

matthew 22:1-14 niv

Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: "The kingdom of Heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

Then he sent some more servants and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’

But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless. Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

For many are invited, but few are chosen."

X

proverbs 25:2 csb

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to investigate a matter.

Jesus answered, "I Am the Way and the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

He reaches out to each of us just as we need so that we have the best chance to seek and find Him. He Himself has placed each of us in our exact time and circumstances for the very purpose of seeking Him out and finding Him acts 17:24-28 .He calls to all humanity to search for Him by these various means of: creation’s awesome order romans 1:18-20  psalm 19:1-4 , humbling weather job 37:6-7 , celestial and earthly signs luke 21:25 , inexplicable miracles hebrews 2:4 , believers’ changed lives ii corinthians 2:14-15, 3:3  matthew 5:13-16 , visits from angels hebrews 2:2 , the prophets and apostles messages hebrews 1:1  ephesians 3:5 , the Divine Record deuteronomy 4:5-8 , Christ’s personal coming john 1:5,9,18 , unsettling dreams job 33:14-30  daniel 4:4-5 , personal afflictions i kings 8:37-40, 58-60  ii corinthians 1:9 , general experience of goodness romans 2:4  luke 6:35  matthew 5:45 , personally experienced kindness hosea 11:4 , sin’s consequences jeremiah 2:19 , consciousness of right and wrong romans 2:15 , and even just the intrinsic knowledge of the Eternal ecclesiastes 3:11 .

acts 17:24-28 esv

The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything. And He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward Him and find Him. Yet He is actually not far from each one of us, for " ‘In Him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, " ‘For we are indeed His offspring.’

my notes:

X

romans 1:18-20 niv

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

X

psalm 19:1-4 esv

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

X

job 37:6-7 csb

For He says to the snow, "Fall to the earth," and the torrential rains, His mighty torrential rains, serve as His sign to all mankind, so that all men may know His work.

X

luke 21:25 esv

And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves,

my notes:

hebrews 2:4 niv

God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.

X

ii corinthians 2:14-15, 3:3 niv

But thanks be to God, Who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of Him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.

X

matthew 5:13-16 niv

You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven.

my notes:

X

hebrews 2:2 esv

For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution,

X

hebrews 1:1 niv

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways,

X

ephesians 3:5 niv

which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.

X

deuteronomy 4:5-8 niv

See, I have taught you decrees and laws as the LORD my God commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land you are entering to take possession of it. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding to the nations, who will hear about all these decrees and say, "Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people." What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the LORD our God is near us whenever we pray to Him? And what other nation is so great as to have such righteous decrees and laws as this body of laws I am setting before you today?

my notes:

X

john 1:5, 9, 18 niv

The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The True Light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.

No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, Who is Himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made Him known.

X

job 33:14-30 niv

For God does speak—now one way, now another— though no one perceives it. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on people as they slumber in their beds, He may speak in their ears and terrify them with warnings, to turn them from wrongdoing and keep them from pride, to preserve them from the pit, their lives from perishing by the sword.

Or someone may be chastened on a bed of pain...

God does all these things to a person— twice, even three times— to turn them back from the pit, that the Light of Life may shine on them.

X

daniel 4:4-5 niv

I, Nebuchadnezzar, was at home in my palace, contented and prosperous. I had a dream that made me afraid. As I was lying in bed, the images and visions that passed through my mind terrified me.

my notes:

X

i kings 8:37-40, 58-60 niv

When famine or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when an enemy besieges them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among your people Israel—being aware of the afflictions of their own hearts, and spreading out their hands toward this temple—then hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. Forgive and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since You know their hearts (for You alone know every human heart), so that they will fear You all the time they live in the land You gave our ancestors.

May He turn our hearts to Him, to walk in obedience to Him and keep the commands, decrees and laws He gave our ancestors. And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, that He may uphold the cause of His servant and the cause of his people Israel according to each day’s need, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.

X

ii corinthians 1:9 esv

Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God Who raises the dead.

X

romans 2:4 niv

Or do you show contempt for the riches of His kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

my notes:

X

luke 6:35 esv

But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for He is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

X

matthew 5:45 niv

that you may be children of your Father in Heaven. He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

X

hosea 11:4 niv

I led them with cords of human kindness, with ties of love. To them I was like one who lifts a little child to the cheek, and I bent down to feed them.

X

jeremiah 2:19 nkjv

Your own wickedness will correct you, And your backslidings will rebuke you. Know therefore and see that it is an evil and bitter thing That you have forsaken the LORD your God, And the fear of Me is not in you," Says the Lord GOD of hosts.

X

romans 2:15 nlt

They demonstrate that God’s law is written in their hearts, for their own conscience and thoughts either accuse them or tell them they are doing right.

X

ecclesiastes 3:11 niv

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.

my notes:

section 3

While we would prefer a straightforward approach from God, we mistakenly judge Him harshly for the seeming lack of that in our own lives john 10:24-39 . God knows our hearts jeremiah 17:9-10 , that mere first-hand knowledge is not enough i corinthians 8:1-2 , but rather a patient, laborious approach to break down our stubborn pride leviticus 26:19  and so effect the reception of the Truth in the heart deuteronomy 30:6 . This is because relationship is not built on mere knowledge revelation 16:9, 11  james 2:19 , but rather a faith-filled response to that knowledge, the agreement, the unity, that the One being sought out is worthy of trust john 3:33  psalm 119:137-138, 140  and relationship psalm 34:8-10  amos 3:3 .

So, God is patient to deal with us according to our ability at the given time mark 4:33  matthew 25:15 , rather than overwhelm us with glories too great for us to bear psalm 139:6  john 16:12 . And yet He continues to strive with our hearts isaiah 43:26  isaiah 1:18 , even adjusting His approach to who we individually are psalm 18:25-27  to rescue us from our own destructive ignorance hosea 4:6  by stirring up a drive to seek Him hosea 5:15  hosea 2:7 . Why is God working so hard to stir us to seek Him?

my notes:

X

john 10:24-39 niv

The Jews who were there gathered around Him, saying, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly."

Jesus answered, "I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in My Father’s name testify about Me, but you do not believe because you are not My sheep...

Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone Him, but Jesus said to them, "I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone Me?"

"We are not stoning you for any good work," they replied, "but for blasphemy, because You, a mere man, claim to be God."...

"Do not believe Me unless I do the works of My Father. But if I do them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father." Again they tried to seize Him, but He escaped their grasp.

X

jeremiah 17:9-10 esv

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? "I the LORD search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds."

my notes:

X

i corinthians 8:1-2 esv

Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." This "knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.
