fear of missing out

section 1

We have FOMO, this fear of loss, but we often do not recognize what we are missing out on right now. We have already been robbed of the Truth by looking for worldly gain by looking "godly" i timothy 6:5  but rejecting the power ii timothy 3:5 . The blessings that could be ours have been consumed by our own idolatry jonah 2:8  because we are pursuing the things of this world rather than true riches luke 16:11-15 . We are isolated and lonely because we refuse to lay our own lives down john 12:24  proverbs 18:1 . We as Christians put on a brave face proverbs 21:29  proverbs 14:13  and flatter to keep each other at a distance i thessalonians 2:5 .

We are missing out on so much already as most believers experience life through their own selfishness and pride which is: darkness, great frustration, affliction and anger ecclesiastes 5:16-17 . Many of us have not experienced the genuine goodness of God in our inner being psalm 34:8 . We remain miserable, accepting the monster we know john 5:6 , hardening our own hearts job 36:13  jeremiah 18:12  ii chronicles 28:22 , rather than being courageous enough to seek God’s favor revelation 21:8  luke 9:24  ii chronicles 33:12 . We are so slow to believe what we have yet to experience ourselves luke 24:25  mark 16:14 . So we remain as we are and miss out on the life of God He is offering to us.

Those who cling to worthless idols turn away from God’s love for them.

X

luke 16:11-15 niv

So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches?...You cannot serve both God and money." The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, "You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

section 2

Those who seek the Lord lack no good thing psalm 34:10 . They have everything they need for life and godliness ii peter 1:3  and thus have everything they need to be truly rich in this life i timothy 6:6  ephesians 1:3, 7-8  and the next i timothy 6:17-19  ephesians 2:6-7 . So, we should seek to love people {His Kingdom} romans 13:8  the way God instructs {His righteousness} so that we are actually loving Him i john 5:1-3 . For when we are seeking His kingdom and righteousness everything else falls into its proper place matthew 6:33 .

X

psalm 34:10 esv

The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

X

ii peter 1:3 csb

His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him Who called us by His own glory and goodness.

X

i timothy 6:6 esv

But godliness with contentment is great gain...

X

ephesians 1:3, 7-8 niv

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that He lavished on us. With all wisdom and understanding...

X

i timothy 6:17-19 niv

Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, Who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.

X

ephesians 2:6-7 esv

and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

X

romans 13:8 niv

Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.

X

i john 5:1-3 esv

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

X

matthew 6:33 niv

But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

my notes:

section 3

One’s own gain is ironically attained in what one is perseveringly pursuing on behalf of others proverbs 21:21 ; for if you pursue your own life you will end up losing it luke 17:33  john 12:24-25  as selfishness results in isolated loss proverbs 18:1  ecclesiastes 8:9  ecclesiastes 5:13  ecclesiastes 6:1-6  proverbs 28:22 . But if you persistently pursue God’s glory by benefiting others with His goodness i corinthians 10:24, 31-11:1 , that is actually the path to experiencing God’s glory, honor and immortality yourself romans 2:7 . When you genuinely love others to bring them eternal benefits you actually find yourself benefited along with the benefit God brings to others through you ii corinthians 1:3-6 , right in your sphere of opportunity ephesians 5:28  proverbs 11:17, 25  titus 3:8 .

X

proverbs 21:21 niv

Whoever pursues righteousness and love finds life, prosperity and honor.

X

luke 17:33 esv

Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.

X

john 12:24-25 esv

Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

my notes:

X

proverbs 18:1 esv

Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.

X

ecclesiastes 8:9 niv

All this I saw, as I applied my mind to everything done under the sun. There is a time when a man lords it over others to his own hurt.

X

ecclesiastes 5:13 esv

There is a grievous evil that I have seen under the sun: riches were kept by their owner to his hurt...

X

ecclesiastes 6:1-6 niv

I have seen another evil under the sun, and it weighs heavily on mankind: God gives some people wealth, possessions and honor, so that they lack nothing their hearts desire, but God does not grant them the ability to enjoy them, and strangers enjoy them instead. This is meaningless, a grievous evil. A man may have a hundred children and live many years; yet no matter how long he lives, if he cannot enjoy his prosperity and does not receive proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he. It comes without meaning, it departs in darkness, and in darkness its name is shrouded. Though it never saw the sun or knew anything, it has more rest than does that man—even if he lives a thousand years twice over but fails to enjoy his prosperity. Do not all go to the same place?

my notes:

X

proverbs 28:22 niv

The stingy are eager to get rich and are unaware that poverty awaits them.

X

i corinthians 10:24, 31-11:1 niv

No one should seek their own good, but the good of others.

So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God...For I am not seeking my own good but the good of many, so that they may be saved. Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.

X

romans 2:7 nas

X

ii corinthians 1:3-6 esv

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, Who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer.

my notes:

X

ephesians 5:28 esv

In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

X

proverbs 11:17, 25 nas

The merciful man does himself good, But the cruel man does himself harm.

The generous man will be prosperous, And he who waters will himself be watered.

X

titus 3:8 niv

This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

my notes:

section 4

This is not a loophole for the flesh to justify selfishness or a clever whitewash for hypocrisy, but a reasonable promise God has assured us with as to why you can boldly reject self-care luke 12:16-34  and confidently lay down your own life here and now for others with total abandonment of self in obedience to God’s instructions i corinthians 10:24  i john 3:16  i john 5:2-3 . Because when faith directs our lives, we know that any loss for the sake of others is rewarded with greater treasures hebrews 11:6 ; that of the riches of the relationship with Christ philippians 3:8  luke 16:11  and the riches of genuine relationship with others in Christ philippians 4:1  i thessalonians 2:19-20 .

X

luke 12:16-34 niv

And He told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest....This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God."

Then Jesus said to His disciples: "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food... do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek His kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.

Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

This treasure of agape relationships is the true substance of life john 1:4  colossians 3:4  deuteronomy 30:20  as opposed to the empty, temporary comforts that self-care can caricaturize luke 12:15  i peter 1:18  hebrews 11:25  ii peter 2:17-19  proverbs 25:14 . Being separated from the life of God ephesians 4:18  is also being unable to truly enjoy the substance of life ecclesiastes 2:25 . The life we now live, if it lacks a genuine relationship to God is much like having the best of foods but the inability to taste the food and sense the texture ecclesiastes 5:18-19, 6:2 ; it is like having a sports car and only having it on display because you don’t know how to drive ecclesiastes 5:11 ; it is a series of frustrating despair proverbs 11:23  jeremiah 2:23-25 . While living out agape love gives us that inner appreciation, the very substance of our life’s experiences, of both pleasantries psalm 4:6-7  psalm 16:2  and difficulties ii corinthians 12:10  which is the spiritual blessings of Heaven perceived through our inner self ephesians 1:3, 3:16 . This is the life that is truly life i timothy 6:19 ; lived…appreciated…perceived…experienced by faith ii corinthians 5:7 …the substance of God’s life for you through your inner being i thessalonians 5:14-18 .

X

ecclesiastes 5:18-19, 6:2 niv

This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God.

...a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous evil.

Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; at mating time they will find her. Do not run until your feet are bare and your throat is dry. But you said, ‘It’s no use! I love foreign gods, and I must go after them.’

This is how we are confident that FOMO is not our god because our God deals with us precisely as our hearts need to find Him, to know Him, to be in a genuine relationship with Him i kings 8:37-40, 58-61  philippians 3:12-14, 8  and with others who are in Him mark 10:28-30  luke 8:20-21 . God works all things out for the good of those who are seeking Him…seeking to know Him…seeking to love Him romans 8:28-29 . God even repays for the loss we experience joel 2:25 , so that nothing is really lost to those who seek God’s glory, even if it is our own foolishness that caused this temporary loss; if we would just persist in repentance and not be stubborn in disobedience ii chronicles 25:6-9  i samuel 12:18-25 . For repentance leads to salvation, but worldly sorrow destroys ii corinthians 7:10 . In turning to God, the newness of God’s life in us can begin ii corinthians 3:16-18  romans 6:4 .

When famine or plague comes to the land, or blight or mildew, locusts or grasshoppers, or when an enemy besieges them in any of their cities, whatever disaster or disease may come, and when a prayer or plea is made by anyone among Your people Israel—being aware of the afflictions of their own hearts, and spreading out their hands toward this temple—then hear from heaven, Your dwelling place. Forgive and act; deal with everyone according to all they do, since You know their hearts (for You alone know every human heart), so that they will fear You all the time they live in the land you gave our ancestors.

May He turn our hearts to Him, to walk in obedience to Him and keep the commands, decrees and laws He gave our ancestors. And may these words of mine, which I have prayed before the LORD, be near to the LORD our God day and night, that He may uphold the cause of His servant and the cause of His people Israel according to each day’s need, so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the LORD is God and that there is no other.

But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Why should you suppose that God will cast you down before the enemy? For God has power to help or to cast down."

So Samuel called upon the LORD, and the LORD sent thunder and rain that day, and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel. And Samuel said to the people, "Do not be afraid; you have done all this evil. Yet do not turn aside from following the LORD, but serve the LORD with all your heart. And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty. For the LORD will not forsake His people, for His great name’s sake, because it has pleased the LORD to make you a people for Himself.

Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the LORD by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way. Only fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things He has done for you. But if you still do wickedly, you shall be swept away, both you and your king."

But when one turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. So, what should our priority be, our pursuit, what we are looking to gain in any and every situation? It is not better circumstances, but a different heart to experience every circumstance in the new way philippians 4:4, 11-13 . It is the pursuit of God’s glory i corinthians 10:31  by the benefiting of others with a life lived like Jesus i corinthians 10:33-11:1  ephesians 5:1-2 : He Himself being a jobless vagrant matthew 8:19-20  Who lived to work day and night, not to earn money and gain possession for Himself but to bring God’s glory to all of us john 18:37  i thessalonians 2:7-12 .

We too should only have one concern in regard to FOMO, that we ourselves are living in such a way as to have full confidence that we ourselves will suffer no ultimate loss. Why? Because if we live like Christ we are seeking the only truly worthwhile pursuit of God Himself i corinthians 9:22-27  ecclesiastes 2:1-3  hebrews 11:6  and that of others as well should not miss out on His eternal glories romans 9:1-3  acts 26:29  acts 20:24  and thus be lost to us i thessalonians 3:5-8  ii corinthians 12:14-15 . If we pursue God’s glory and the eternal blessing of others, we will suffer no loss unto ourselves and truly we have no fear of loss…no FOMO.

But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. Having so fond an affection for you, we were well-pleased to impart to you not only the Gospel of God but also our own lives, because you had become very dear to us. For you recall, brethren, our labor and hardship, how working night and day so as not to be a burden to any of you, we proclaimed to you the Gospel of God. You are witnesses, and so is God, how devoutly and uprightly and blamelessly we behaved toward you believers; just as you know how we were exhorting and encouraging and imploring each one of you as a father would his own children, so that you would walk in a manner worthy of the God Who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.

i corinthians 9:22-27 nas

...I have become all things to all men, so that I may by all means save some. I do all things for the sake of the Gospel, so that I may become a fellow partaker of it. Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They then do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. Therefore I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified.

ecclesiastes 2:1-3 bsb

I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy what is good!" But it proved to be futile. I said of laughter, "It is folly," and of pleasure, "What does it accomplish?" I sought to cheer my body with wine and to embrace folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom—until I could see what was worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives.

hebrews 11:6 esv

And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.

romans 9:1-3 esv

I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit— that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh.

Paul replied, "Short time or long—I pray to God that not only you but all who are listening to me today may become what I am, except for these chains."

acts 20:24 nlt

But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.

i thessalonians 3:5-8 nas

For this reason, when I could endure it no longer, I also sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter might have tempted you, and our labor would be in vain. But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always think kindly of us, longing to see us just as we also long to see you, for this reason, brethren, in all our distress and affliction we were comforted about you through your faith; for now we really live, if you stand firm in the Lord.

ii corinthians 12:14-15 esv

Here for the third time I am ready to come to you. And I will not be a burden, for I seek not what is yours but you. For children are not obligated to save up for their parents, but parents for their children. I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?
