Godliness with contentment is almost like a mythological creature. We hear of it, but has anyone really experienced it beyond blurry photos? Yet, this godliness i peter 1:14-15  with contentment philippians 4:11-13  is one of the exceeding glories of knowing Jesus as it is described as GREAT GAIN i timothy 6:6 . We struggle to simply be happy or content in our current circumstances ecclesiastes 6:7 . We are usually looking to the future with craving proverbs 21:25-26  or looking to the past lamenting the loss of something we deemed "better" ecclesiastes 7:10 .

As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as He Who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do...

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him Who gives me strength.

Hallelujah! We can grow in godliness with contentment by practice i timothy 4:7 , but only by the gifting of God Himself to us ecclesiastes 3:12-13  ecclesiastes 2:24-25 . He is the One Who can bring us real good psalm 4:6-8 , genuine benefits psalm 103:2 . His will is good, pleasing and perfect, but only those whose minds have been transformed experience it romans 12:2 . God accomplishes this in cooperation with us when we serve Him with self-sacrificing love romans 12:1  by doing Biblical good to others psalm 37:3  i thessalonians 5:15-18  as He Himself does matthew 5:43-48 , and thus our desires are changed psalm 37:4  i peter 4:1-2  and we have confidence that we truly get what we are asking for i john 5:14-15, 21 , and that there is nothing lacking for us to be godly and content ii peter 1:2-3  ii corinthians 9:8 . Literally, we lack nothing psalm 23:1  because of Jesus in our lives romans 8:32 .

I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That each of them may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil—this is the gift of God.

A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, for without Him, who can eat or find enjoyment?

This is the GREAT GAIN we can experience in knowing our Lord Jesus philippians 3:7-8 . Jesus is our good, an unending fountain of goodness to meet all our needs philippians 4:19  john 4:13-14  and fulfill all our transformed, divine desires- that which is truly good, pleasing and perfect psalm 34:8-14 . It is for this very reason we are instructed to rejoice in the Lord philippians 4:4 , because as we practice that, our desires change due to the Truth that what we invest in, what we reckon as a treasure will soon enough either fill the heart with disappointment proverbs 10:28  or fulfill the heart’s desire proverbs 10:24 ; its one or the other matthew 6:19-24  psalm 112 . The world experiences temporary pleasures that seem to satisfy for only a moment hebrews 11:25  and then makes the heart crave more because it is actually lacking ephesians 4:17-19  ecclesiastes 1:15 . But the one whose heart is being transformed to love the Lord and love others, finds life to be an ever-growing delight of God’s grace overwhelming all our circumstances psalm 16  ii corinthians 6:10  romans 8:28-30  proverbs 4:18 .
