the spiral staircase of biblical communication
section 1
What we are is not what we are called to be romans 13:14 ii corinthians 5:16-17 , so God sent Jesus to free us from our natural selves romans 7:24-25, 8:3-4 by transforming us into the likeness of Christ ephesians 4:22-24 romans 8:29 ii corinthians 3:18 . It pleased Him to do this through relationships, through our uniting and growing up TOGETHER in Him philemon 6 john 12:24 . This is why commUNIcating through Truth and Love is so important ephesians 4:15 .
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.
From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard Him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
my notes:
Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.
For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, He condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
...put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, in order that He might be the firstborn among many brothers.
So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—Who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like Him as we are changed into His glorious image.
and I pray that the fellowship of your faith may become effective through the knowledge of every good thing which is in you for Christ’s sake.
my notes:
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him Who is the head, into Christ...

section 2
As corruption is highly contagious i corinthians 15:33 ii timothy 2:16 , so Christ-likeness is by God’s grace communicable i corinthians 1:21 daniel 12:3 matthew 5:19 . But be warned, corruption naturally pollutes those surrounding us, even unintentionally haggai 2:11-13 ; corruption cannot accidently or even by mere human effort be remedied jeremiah 2:22 . But our relating righteousness to another is done laboriously colossians 1:28-29 , wisely proverbs 13:20 , exemplifiedly philippians 3:17 ezra 7:10 and intentionally romans 1:11-13 by God’s grace isaiah 1:18-19 psalm 51:7 . So, as we commUNIcate with one another we can grow up more and more to be like Christ because God desires that john 17:19 proverbs 4:18 i thessalonians 4:1-3 i thessalonians 5:23-24 . So, now we will look at how our communication should be in order to grow up in Christ ephesians 4:15 colossians 2:6-7 .
Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly.
For since, in God’s wisdom, the world did not know God through wisdom, God was pleased to save those who believe through the foolishness of what is preached.
Those who have insight will shine like the bright expanse of the heavens, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.
Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
"Thus says the LORD of hosts: Ask the priests about the law:
‘If someone carries holy meat in the fold of his garment and touches with his fold bread or stew or wine or oil or any kind of food, does it become holy?’" The priests answered and said, "No."
Then Haggai said, "If someone who is unclean by contact with a dead body touches any of these, does it become unclean?" The priests answered and said, "It does become unclean."
Even if you wash with lye and use a great amount of bleach, the stain of your iniquity is still in front of Me. This is the Lord GOD’s declaration.
my notes:
Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. For this I toil, struggling with all His energy that He powerfully works within me.
Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Brethren, join in following my example, and observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.
For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD and to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.
For I want very much to see you, so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you, that is, to be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.
Now I don’t want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that I often planned to come to you (but was prevented until now) in order that I might have a fruitful ministry among you, just as I have had among the rest of the Gentiles.
Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. If you are willing and obedient, you shall eat the good of the land...
Purify me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, which shines brighter and brighter until full day.
Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality...
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He Who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him Who is the head, into Christ...
Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

section 3
truthful & loving
While these two principles could be looked at separately; together they are the double-edged sword ii john 3-6 job 11:6 of effective communication through which we come to understand all other aspects of maturation-causing communication ephesians 4:15 . Either one without the other and we will err as we communicate jeremiah 23:16-22 i corinthians 13:1 matthew 7:12-15 because Truth and Love are, so to speak, a complete system of God’s communication with us john 1:1, 17-18 psalm 25:10 . We build genuine relationships with Truth AND Love proverbs 3:3-4 and it is through those Truthful, Loving relationships that we are all built up ephesians 4:15 .
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love. I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father.
And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it.
He would show you the secrets of wisdom, for true wisdom has two sides. Know then that God has chosen to overlook some of your iniquity.
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into Him Who is the head, into Christ...
Thus says the LORD of hosts: "Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the LORD.
They say continually to those who despise the Word of the LORD, ‘It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, ‘No disaster shall come upon you.’"
For who among them has stood in the council of the LORD to see and to hear His Word, or who has paid attention to His Word and listened?
Behold, the storm of the LORD! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest; it will burst upon the head of the wicked. The anger of the LORD will not turn back until He has executed and accomplished the intents of His heart. In the latter days you will understand it clearly.
"I did not send the prophets, yet they ran; I did not speak to them, yet they prophesied. But if they had stood in My council, then they would have proclaimed My words to My people, and they would have turned them from their evil way, and from the evil of their deeds.
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.
Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God; the only God, Who is at the Father’s side, He has made Him known.
All the LORD’s ways show faithful love and truth to those who keep His covenant and decrees.
Do not let gracious love and truth leave you. Bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart, and find favor and a good reputation with God and men.
Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ...
my notes:
section 4
The difficulty for us is that we are unstable people who lurch from one extreme to another james 1:8 . But in our seeking the Lord we should learn to hold onto BOTH Truth and Love ecclesiastes 7:16-18 which are the guardrails of the straight and narrow road matthew 7:13-14 proverbs 4:25-27 keeping us from pitfalls like: pride or that of selfishness mark 8:15 , brutality galatians 5:14-15 or that of flattery proverbs 26:28 , gossip/slander leviticus 19:16 i timothy 5:13 or that of cowardice leviticus 5:1 proverbs 24:10-12 , arguing philippians 2:14 or that of apathy proverbs 1:32 zephaniah 1:12 , complaining philippians 2:14 or that of disguising ourselves proverbs 20:14 proverbs 23:7 , boasting james 4:16 or that of false modesty i corinthians 15:10 , godless chatter i timothy 6:20 or that of lip-service isaiah 48:1, 29:13 psalm 50:16-17 .
Do not be overly righteous, Nor be overly wise: Why should you destroy yourself? Do not be overly wicked, Nor be foolish: Why should you die before your time? It is good that you grasp this, And also not remove your hand from the other; For he who fears God will escape them all.
Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Ponder the path of your feet; then all your ways will be sure. Do not swerve to the right or to the left; turn your foot away from evil.
And He cautioned them, saying, "Watch out; beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.
my notes:
Do not go about spreading slander among your people; do not jeopardize your neighbor’s life; I am the Lord.
Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.
If anyone sins in that he hears a public adjuration to testify, and though he is a witness, whether he has seen or come to know the matter, yet does not speak, he shall bear his iniquity;
If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. If you say, "Behold, we did not know this," does not He Who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not He Who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will He not repay man according to his work?
For the simple are killed by their turning away, and the complacency of fools destroys them;
At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and I will punish the men who are complacent, those who say in their hearts, ‘The LORD will not do good, nor will He do ill.’
The buyer haggles over the price, saying, "It’s worthless," then brags about getting a bargain!
for he is like one who is inwardly calculating. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me.
Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge...
my notes:
"Listen to this, house of Jacob— those who are called by the name Israel and have descended from Judah, who swear by the name of the Lord and declare the God of Israel, but not in truth or righteousness.
The Lord said: These people approach Me with their speeches to honor Me with lip-service, yet their hearts are far from Me, and human rules direct their worship of Me.
But to the wicked God says: "What right have you to recite My statutes or take My covenant on your lips? For you hate discipline, and you cast My words behind you.

Truth and Love are also the two train-tracks that lead us in the Way joshua 1:7 so that we know how to communicate God’s way, which would prepare, equip and enable us to communicate in the needful way.
Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law that Moses My servant commanded you. Do not turn from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go.
my notes:
section 6
Truth without Love is like an overwhelming light obstructing sight matthew 15:14 . Love without Truth is like pitch darkness proverbs 4:19 . Either way you are blinded to the glory of God ii corinthians 4:4 . Much like the physical contrast and balance of light and darkness, it is only where Truth and Love meet that the wondrous glory of our Lord can be genuinely seen psalm 85:7-13 . Truth purifies us so that we are enabled to Love i peter 1:22 . Truth sets free john 8:32 and leads to godliness titus 1:1 , but it is Love that makes Truth palatable proverbs 16:21 colossians 4:6 and gives Truth it’s full effect i corinthians 13:1 . Truth sanctifies john 17:17 , but love sets us apart for others’ sake john 17:19 . Truth has no substance without Love i corinthians 8:1-3 , and Love is not Love without Truth in action i john 3:18, 5:2-3 ephesians 5:9 . Love rejoices in the Truth i corinthians 13:6 zechariah 8:19 for Love is defined by the Truth i john 4:16 i john 3:16 john 14:6 .
Let them alone; they are blind guides. And if the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.
The way of the wicked is like deep darkness; they do not know over what they stumble.
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ, Who is the image of God.
my notes:
Show us your faithful love, Lord, and give us your salvation. I will listen to what God will say; surely the Lord will declare peace to His people, His faithful ones, and not let them go back to foolish ways. His salvation is very near those who fear Him, so that glory may dwell in our land.
Faithful love and truth will join together; righteousness and peace will embrace. Truth will spring up from the earth, and righteousness will look down from heaven. Also, the Lord will provide what is good, and our land will yield its crops. Righteousness will go before Him to prepare the way for His steps.
Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart...
Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of God’s elect and their knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness...
The wise of heart is called discerning, and sweetness of speech increases persuasiveness.
Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.
If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.
Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." This "knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.
Little children, let us not love in word or speech, but in action and in truth.
This is how we know that we love God’s children: when we love God and obey His commands. For this is what love for God is: to keep His commands. And His commands are not a burden...
Thus says the LORD of hosts: The fast of the fourth month and the fast of the fifth and the fast of the seventh and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Judah seasons of joy and gladness and cheerful feasts. Therefore love truth and peace.
So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is Love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
By this we know love, that {Jesus} laid down His life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
Jesus said to him, "I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
my notes:
section 7
So, this is why it pleases God that Truth AND Love are our catalyst, agent and objective in communication as it is from, with and to Truth AND Love romans 11:36 i john 4:8 john 14:6 that we have genuine concern for one another i corinthians 10:24 philippians 2:4 , real help for each other ephesians 4:25 james 5:19-20 and reside together in the grace, mercy and peace of our Lord ii john 3 .
For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be glory forever. Amen.
Jesus said to him, "I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.
Therefore, putting away lying, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, because we are members of one another.
My brothers, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone brings him back, let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

section 8
In other words, let us speak sincerely out of concern for one another’s eternal good only that which is needed and helpful for building our relationships and especially each other’s relationships with the Lord at the very cost of ourselves ephesians 4:15, 29 leviticus 19:16-18 ii corinthians 12:15 zechariah 8:16-17 .
but speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him Who is the head, even Christ...
Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.
You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand up against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD.
You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him.
You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD.
I will most gladly spend and be spent for your souls. If I love you more, am I to be loved less?
my notes:
These are the things that you shall do: Speak the truth to one another; render in your gates judgments that are true and make for peace; do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath, for all these things I hate, declares the LORD.
